Actually, cross play is possible. Fortnite is a modern day example of who is already currently successfully doing it. There is an option to toggle between platforms if you want to play with Ps4 only or XBox and ps4 or even against mobile players and pc players. So that way your not forced to play with PC players if you don’t feel comfortable.
How is it done? Honestly, i dont know. But I read somewhere that you have to sign up with Epic games and sign in and there is no other way around it.
I know that crossplay is possible. Its just not healthy. I would not want ‘hackymcslinkyfingers’ continuously teleporting to my location every time I try to escape and avoid griefing/trolling.

No. I don’t think Hello Games, given just one year, can hand us crossplay multiplayer and all these options to turn it off. Programming multiplayer, as is, is a long process that involves alot of trial and error and balancing so I doubt HG would be able to pull-off cross play that quickly AND add extra features in the game. Too small of a team to do it so fast.
By not using the platform dependant API. It means epic games has its own user managment and match-making service. It’s not impossible, but now we’re talking major investment into a proprietary and self-maintained architecture. Not where I’d want HG to spend their money, honestly.
Also, fortnite is cross-play between consoles and PC. THere is no crossplay between Xbox and PS4 even there.
I’ve dealt with Sony (not the gaming division, but it doesn’t matter that much). It’s not entirely impossible that the suits in Japan will see sense if the money’s right (and right now it isn’t), but highly unlikely.
