Base Building

I tried a gas giant and I tried a cave. I had no issues. Did not try a cave on a gas giant.

There’s been a recurring issue since Worlds-2 where buildable items suddenly become unplaceable on terrain, or even at all. I don’t know if that’s been fixed yet, but when it cropped up I’ve had to completely restart NMS to get things working again. Maybe you experienced this bug?

Thanks, it felt like a bug or glitch, yeah.

I don’t know about you, but I’m spending more time tearing down bases than building them recently. The locations have changed so much (meaning unpretty colour combinations and view blocking weather), sometimes old bases were out of place or floating or grown over.

A whole new generation of bases needs to be built! Let’s see how these ruins fit in, I have collected lots of them. :face_with_tongue:

Oddly enough, I’ve been doing exactly the same thing. Over the last six months, or so, what with catching up on in-game progress, expeditions, and updates, I find I’ve built more than a hundred bases I no longer need.

For nearly a week I’ve been roaming the universe, deleting them. I now have so many reclaimed materials my backpack is running out of space.

Does the Base Salvage tech still only collect SOME of your deleted base materials or did that get changed at some point so that you get it ALL back.

I also went on a base deleting rampage recently but wasn’t sure regarding reclaiming so I manually deleted 90% of each base.

I don’t know - I manually delete everything. It gives the maximum return of materials, but it’s one of the reasons it takes so long.

Hurray!
This particular old base looks better than before! Worse storms, but that’s okay.
It’s called Hammock.

Paid a visit to this base last night, was fun to explore and the mountains in the distance are just crying out to have castles built on them.

I was also very impressed by the upside down stool and wonder projector of the current planet making a very cool plinth.

I also ended up in a bizarre facility later in my travels. It claimed to be an Atlas facility that would pay me for my time. I like nanites and quicksilver and they had programmes that rewarded those so, who was I to turn that offer down?

It was about a three day wait in the waiting room. I’m not sure if that was part of the test or if they forgot about me.

When they called me in, all they wanted me to do was stair at these ink blots and say what I saw.

I alternated my answers between “I see a qr code” and “I see a Rorschach test”.

The Vy’Keen overseeing the tests got redder as the exam went on, I swear at some point steam came out. Don’t think it had anything to do with my answers, it may have also been part of the test. I think I heard them yelling profanities at the moon on my way out.

Not sure what the test was for, there is a two hour period I can’t recall, but I have this overriding feeling that I can only describe as, “expecting mother”.

Is it taking visitors? I wanna bring my skateboard to the half pipe that Hammock is suspended across. (OMFG why don’t we have hover boards in NMS yet?!?!?)

I knew I was near the 16,000 part limit on console, so I used save editor to count up the parts on each base. Was at 15,780 (across 40 bases). I already have too many of each resource so I just used the base building app while I had my save transferred, to just drag and select portions of bases to cull.

Before I went this route though, I did manually delete a highly detailed, lit at every turn, stairs to the sky. Back when they first extended the build limit from the original 300u radius, built at my legacy foundations base. It took me an hour to delete, thats when I decided, let’s just cull with the base app drag and select tool.

Some other bases I more or less destroyed or reduced completely, but their location is tied to memories or near other travellers (hello @Sir_oops :waving_hand:) so I’ve kept remnants and a base computer.

A lot of my parts got used up by industry in recent months, I built a bunch of fishing spots in a system in the star chain that almost had every fish biome and most recently I built refinery’s for gasses in a gas giant system that contains all gas types.

I almost found a Titan system that had each biome type. That’s the next hunt. Find a Titan system with moons that have frost crystals, gamma root, star bulb, cactus, fungi and am I forgetting one? I thought there were six… Solar vine!!

I found one that was very close, but two moons were gamma.

Let’s try the Nomad: Wheeeee! (sorry, it’s mostly stormy there)

My brain works funny.

I read that and immediately thought “ham hocks” (giggle) … Makes sense … The mountain tops look like two ham hocks.

I do admit to being a foodie.

Is this a bug as well? You see the selected part is a long horizontal Stone Large Window. But what it places has a squashed small trapezoid shape (1).
In the same location, sometimes, the trapezoid is visible (2) and sometimes the horizontal window flickers though (3) .

Also is it normal to fish up an alloy window?

A stingray is clogging my teleporter. I can’t even! Enough base building for today!

What universe are you in? :joy:
The wall piece must be a bug. Are you grabbing the wall piece that shows in the list of parts or are you opening the expanded part list and grabbing a specific piece?

It’s just glitching a little! Happens all the time!

Sorry, I don’t know what that means. I press Z, and click a tab like “timber” or “stone” and scroll and select.

 I was just doing this, I found half pipes on a titan planet. And I was trying to use it, the pilgrim and nomad worked the best. I need better boost! I think we need a tripod camera view to do it right.

Stone, wood and steel building walls are contextual, so the bottom, mid and top layers will change their look as you build more height. You can also expand the walls/windows/doors to select a non contextual variant, this allows you to hand pick whether the wall will have the foundation/mid/top aesthetic. This is useful in some scenarios e.g where you don’t want tall overhanging parts to suddenly have the foundational look of a wall.

This is the expanded list sheralmyst mentioned. Some other parts also have an expandable selection that isn’t immediately apparent (like the purple glass/corrupted sentinel decorations). Off the top of my head I want to say its a little yellow marker that indicates a build object has an expanded range or selection.

You can open variants. In this screenshot I have opened the variants for the large window. If you choose the variant you want, it will not change when you stack another wall piece on top of it.
It sounds like your wall may not know which variant it is supposed to be. If you just use the first variant without opening the expanded list, it will change when you set a piece on top of it.
I do not seem to be having any issues.

Oh this reminds me of the worst part of the variants menu, the pictures do not reflect what the parts look like

Yeah. 1st and 2nd are correct, the 3rd has the low window and the trim across the top but it does not show it in the menu…at least I think it’s the 3rd that has the trim. :joy:

@toddumptious @sheralmyst Thanks for the explanation!

There are variants?!? You see how seldom I build bases! I usually just build a wood box for survival… Or use these room sized segments.

Yeah, sometimes the variant sticks and sometimes it changes, I must have triggered it by accident. Is it perhaps the scroll wheel? I was messing with that. I remember only that pressing V changes the snapping mode.
