Base Building

Revisiting my favorite settlement…this time with a lesson learned.

I’m still very satisfied with how this is working out. The settlement is thriving, and my staff buildings provide a great place for those ‘expanding the base’ retirees that I still have on the payroll.

But…

Usually when I get past that expanding the base stuff my “main base” falls way down my list of places to go. If I have need for a small amount of plant material I will pop through to visit the farmer, and that’s generally about it. By then I’ve generally built a better place to do the refining or cooking, usually with a more convenient layout of storage.

But these settlers…I am passing through there all the time. And just about every time ‘since I’m there,’ I harvest all the plants…and shove everything into the pantry. This lead to pantry storage looking a whole lot like my real life gf’s garage. My mostly constant presence fishing at my main base for the past several days has been because I have been trying to cook my pantry into some semblance of order.

Some recent build silliness

This is Rusty. He runs Rusty’s Rustacular Rust Emporium

Exploring the outer outer rims, decided to make some anomalous bases.

A spacetime glitch or perhaps a parasitic fungi that mimics its structural host to ensnare the wary traveller who left their wits a few miles back?

I took inspiration from how Devs did reflections with 3d games in the 90s/00s/sometimestothisday and then a subconscious prod that some stairs would make for some Escher times.

Suddenly realising remaking Ico in NMS might be a feasible project some day :exploding_head:

This is coming from the guy who almost finished building a to scale Riften with decorated interiors in Valheim and then never went back to actually finish it. So don’t wait up

Definitely must visit. I have always wanted to dance on a ceiling
You really should not have eaten the flowers on the barge

Woo, you made it!

I was just passing through Edison and it looks like someone is building something new there. Don’t recognise the username but it looks like they aren’t finished yet.

I’m very curious to see what it ends up being, so far it looks like some sort of automatic dino feeder sculpture thing. Lots of glitch building silliness going on too with tiny teleporters and nip bud farm and a power toggle for a trap floor.

Pics transferring '^ _ ^

It’s in Edison ECSD and is called “XD” with a sentinel and atlas icon following it.

Pic edit:

Blacked the name out as not sure who it is and don’t want to offend any lurkers or alumni

It was the thumbnail that pulled me in, they got a weird glitch shot of the water, made it look veiny. I thought and assumed it was a nearby base of a player on the Anomaly/Nexus and was shocked to see I was still in Edison.

Will check it out. There are others on social posting links to here and having nostalgia for the old waking titan arg due to the decal so we may see some people crop up along the old chain.

A question for the base builders: in the last expedition, we were supposed to build a base on a gas giant, which I did.

I only had the basic wooden parts, and some underwater thing, I think that’s normal for an expedition (the main save unlocks don’t transfer). During the expedition we also collected these new ruin parts. Don’t recall whether that was a mission, but anyway, I collected some ruin parts and their materials.

On the gas giant, I couldn’t use half the parts I had: I couldn’t place any lights, no posters, and none of the ruin parts, they didn’t snap to anything. I’m not a big base builder, I lack experience to tell whether that was a glitch, did I do something wrong (I had the materials I think), or is that expected?

The ruin parts don’t snap. You have to free place them. Their size is also incompatible with the other building parts, so they can’t be easily mixed.

On the other hand, you can put them wherever you like, in any orientation you want, and you can merge them into each other - which allows you to create novel structures. They can also be resized - although getting an accurate match is tricky.

The ruin pieces are decorative in nature and not listed as building pieces.

Was this happening recently or was this before the patch? It sounds like you may also have hit the object placement bug thats been plaguing play sessions the last two months.

After X amount of time you can no longer place base parts, exocraft and some other things. The only thing you can place is a nautilon in water and a base computer.

If you couldn’t place anything including lights, it’s possible you hit the bug. Closing and restarting the game fixes it, the last patch also mentioned it had fixed the bug.

Sorry If I misunderstood and you are indeed just talking about things not snapping to ruin pieces, they work better in free placement, or by using wires/other objects to line them up/phase through where you want them to.

Thanks for your answers, I haven’t tried again since then. So I’m supposed to place the ruins on the ground only? I think that didn’t work either, but I’ll try again. I was in an open cave (with a pool) on the gas giant, maybe the cave floor didn’t count as valid?

Strange. You can place the ruin pieces anywhere. They just do not snap because they are decorative.
Sounds like a weird issue you are having. I will jump to a gas planet and check it out…

Added a seahorse observation deck to my main base. Seemed appropriate for the citizen scientist.
