Worlds part 2 - Update 5.50 (Spoilers)

And one more for Jenny and the wimp…

I missed that somehow yesterday…

If I figure out how to fish up a boot face I’ll post the results.

I like how all the moons orbit around the gas giant in the Discovery tab. I wasn’t sure if they were going to come back (sped up for levity)

I just noticed on rewatch, it just completely drops a moon :joy:

I was initially captivated by the direction the story was taking, and the technical improvements fitted in really well.

But then, within just a few hours, the story expansion was over. I was actually quite disappointed, with a sense of a great opportunity missed.

Now I am assuming (hoping) that this update was just the tech part of a larger improvement, and that the meat of the story progression has been reserved for expeditions - which can’t start until 5th February, when the current expedition ends.

Well… Given the amount of work needed to create the next chunk of story, I’m ok with a couple of hours.

It felt like it was going to be a bigger journey alright, especially when the memory seed wasn’t enough, I was anticipating another fetch quest series but then it just wanted a pound of Disruptor flesh on the spot :joy:

I get the feeling we’ve more parts to the story and the idea of a short 4 part arc has been long thrown out the window… I would say the void mother arc is officially closed now that she has returned on a foundational level, but l think there’s going to be a lot more to come with no real end in sight. Our new Autophage friend seems to hint our work has only just begun before they zip off.

And now that we can essentially bring data back from the past as they liked to put it (a nod to HG bringing tech back from the future?) can we get our multi-swords now? We know they existed :stuck_out_tongue: in one iteration at least…

While the quest line is short, it’s detail is quite wide in how tailored nearly every stage is to player choice and the flavour texts that are generated from your choices.

I look forward to seeing the lang files with the full text dump:D

I can feel it in my core that there will be a vague Easter Eggy link popping up somewhere, loosely linking the NMS universe with that of the LNF one.
I don’t think they will be connected but I’m sure HG will slip something 'lore-ish in there for for the diehard NMS fans.

Grmbl… loaded my longest, oldest save (the only one I have with the Atlas quest finished and somewhat decent equipment), and been pulsing around for over an hour, without getting the new mission. Got under a rebel star, got a dyson lens, a dozen traders, acquired a pirate dreadnaught and fell through the floor into space in another freighter as quick side activities, but no sight of the mission I was looking for…

And by now I’ve put down on a ridiculously high ledge where you can’t see the bottom, inhabited by a colony of of ferral robots. It was a fun evening all in all, but I don’t think I saw much of the new stuff yet, given that I can’t see purple systems if I can’t do the mission. Maybe the autophages don’t hang out in Budulangr much…

Have you finished the Autophage quest line and built a staff? As long as that’s done it should trigger while pulsing

Ah… no, I haven’t. Wasn’t aware it was necessary. So I have to do that first, huh? What’s it called again? And how do you pick it up?

Ah, yes - I remember now - I needed a staff to progress the quest. It makes sense that you couldn’t start it without one. It is, after all, the next chapter in the autophage saga.

Good question… I think it had something to do with Tethys and Laylaps?

Edit:

@jedidia

According to a Reddit post a year ago…

Complete the artemis quest

Start running a settlement

Complete trace of metal quest

Find an echo locator

Find and clear a harmonic camp

Warp to any system, quest should start after approx 30 seconds, this will be a communication, follow steps to start quest.

Seems like it might be still relevant.

You build your staff during the “They Who Returned” quest. Unfortunately, to trigger They Who Returned, you need to have completed almost every other quest in the game. Specifically, you need to have completed The Purge, which is the concluding section of the Artemis quest and the Atlas Path, and you need to have completed “A Trace Of Metal”.

Trace of metal might be the trickier one to trigger as it requires going back and forth with yr settlement for a bit before they send out the distress call that starts the quest line.

If you already have an AI exomech and Laylaps then you’ve definitely already done this quest line

Goodness me. 3.7 Gb patch incoming…

Has anyone been tempted by the new ABANDONED mode?
Once I’ve ‘successfully’ finished the new mission/lore, I might give this a go…

I believe @LicoriceMint is starting one

Sure stick Permadeath on while you’re at it :stuck_out_tongue:

Incredible! This update has resulted in my seeing 15 topics with new posts today. That’s a record (for me anyway) and an indication of player delight in Worlds Part 2.

I got downright giggly at all the “wows” as I watched Sean’s Deep Dive. Now I really, really need to order that new PC with RTX 4080 card (I get a 3% discount on the PC).

Okay so this is kind of a big deal and I hope Martin Griffiths explains how they’re doing it (could just be rendering everything twice at low cost?) but I’m getting ahead of myself.

For the longest time, videogames have been handling reflections with what is known as SSR or screen space reflections. Basically it can only reflect what is on the screen but it’s a neat little trick most games get by with.

The downsides here are as things leave the screen, they sorta ghost or fade out of the reflection. (It’s also not a true reflection, more a mirroring)

In no mans sky the SSR doesn’t even fit the full margin of the screen in water reflections. You’ll notice a little buffer on the left and right sides of the screen where the water reflection fades out.

Well the new reflections of the sky and terrain don’t seem to be done via SSR. They stay reflected even when not on screen. This is insanely impressive and as someone who has a sore spot for SSR ghost fade, I am in love

In the following screens I will also use the green crystals to show you the faults in SSR as its reflection fades as the object leaves the scree . Pretty much everything is reflected with SSR, floating islands too (the ones in the screen don’t reflect because the SSR ignores objects outside of its sphere of influence, but if they were closer they would behave like the crystals reflection)

The planets, the clouds, and the terrain will stay. So they’re not done with SSR :exploding_head:

Has anyone created a Quest flow chart… Which are prerequisites for another quest or for some item of equipment, etc… And which are side quests? And if a side quest, is another quest a precursor?

The game is getting more complicated. :joy:
