In case anyone wants to make oneā¦
So this is likely inspired by Blade Runner. According to Ridley Scott, Deckard, who is tasked with tracking down replicants, is himself a replicant. The unicorn is a reference to that point. Itās complicated and symbolic but, centers around a dream. To me, this figure in the Nexus, which , in Blade Runner is what the replicants were called, could have been alluding to the autophage and the lore to come. It makes me wonder if we are less humanoid that we think.
These replicants (the Nexus-6 models) returned to earth, where they were forbidden due to their āstand their groundā nature, to try to find a way to extend their lifespan.
With all of the autophage parts laying around in NMS, could a similar thing be happening with them?
One of the Nexus-6 models is dying and tells Deckard about the ability to go where humans cannot and seeing things no human can seeā¦
Iāve seen thingsā¦
That has been in the NMS trailer from the very startā¦
It is in the lore. No humanoid can see all 18 quintillion planetsā¦but perhaps an autophage couldā¦
Likely?? Disregarding the fact that itās basically impossible to see an Origami unicorn and not think of blade runner, we have the āIāve seen thingsā trailer (mentioned by you), the beginning line of the most iconic monologue from blade runner, spoken by the original actor. It doesnāt get any less subtle than that.
And then, of course, thereās the overarching theme of the movie and espcially the point of the unicorn itself: What is human? What is real? How do you know your memories are real? how can you be sure? And does it even matter? Which has a lot of parallels to NMSā core theme of living inside of a simulated universe.
I wouldnāt call it likely. Iād call it dead certain.
Oh, I knew the unicorn was from Blade Runner, I was just trying to think of a reason HG would put it in. Thereās nothing quite like replicants in NMS, unless you count the Korvax.
Ah, I didnāt know the āNexusā reference, that probably explains it
Synthetigeks?
In one article or interview before the initial release of NMS, Sean mentioned that he enjoyed how some games included easter-eggs that werenāt found for decades. My memory of this is fuzzy so I donāt remember the exact context nor where I saw it. I expect that this isnāt the only reference to early Sci-fi that will get found somewhere in the game.
Also, Blade Runner is set in 2019. When did this origami appear? I canāt even remember when we got the new Nexus
OMG just found on Goodwill
My first step into the Bladerunner universe was this game at the fitting age of 11
I saw the movie a few years later in my teens and I feel having played the game first took some of that initial impact out of the film for me. I felt like I knew more about what was going on than feckin Deckard XD
I still havenāt seen the new film ā ^ _ ^ But I have been meaning to
Murrays Teapot is out thereā¦ somewhereā¦ Prove me wrong (I like to imagine its a giant floating joe danger head)
For those curious about some source details for this little easter egg, I added some info here:
He explains well what I was thinking when people kept complaining about not enough variety. It is easy to become locked into certain types of planets. For instance, paradise planets are hugely popular. But by desiring only paradise planets, you thereby limit your experience in NMS.
It makes the case for exploring on foot.
Itās a really well thought out video, approaching the problem from 3 different thought fields I felt covered most peoples mindsets when viewing a games āvalueā.
The Novelty moments over time graphing I found to be particularly eye opening, you could see (even just from his own personal idea of what a novel moment is) just how much HG have shifted the gameplay progression to pad stuff out across several hundred hours. Thats the graph Iāll be using to convince old friends from launch to return
Waiting for the day Kanaju and Kyle Culver join forces, the thought and care they put in to their NMS videos is unmatched (if anyone knows of similar video essayist/narrative/stylistic video types please send them my way, Id be happy to be wrong about those guys being unmatched :D)
No Manās Sky Beyond Release:
August 14, 2019
Perhaps it was an easter egg to mark the development and coming of their new āfantasy RPGā.
- No Manās Sky = Science-Fiction (Sci-Fi) RPG
- Light No Fire = Fantasy RPG (ft. Mythology)
2019-2024 = 5 years of LNF development leading to itās announcement at The Game Awards.
Sean Murray from Hello Games shared that āLight No Fireā has been in development for the past five years when discussing the new game.
In addition to the perfectly fitting Blade Runner reference (as discussed above), also perfectly fittingā¦
A unicorn represents not science fiction, but fantasy and mythology. LNF covers aspects of both fantasy and mythology. Dragons are coming to LNF, dragons are mythological creatures, and have appeared in numerous fantasy stories, from āThe Hobbitā to āGame of Thronesā. HG reference mythology in NMS, (ex. Minotaur). A&S referenced mythology in the Waking Titan ARG, (ex. Titan). A unicorn is yet another reference to mythology.
Light No Fire covers both fantasy and mythology, summarized as simply āa fantasy RPG.ā
Soā¦
Does this mean unicorns are confirmed for LNF? ā (A paper one is confirmed for NMS.)
Summary
Iāll be looking for mermaids, too. I can hear āthe song of the sirensā calling me.
Must resistā¦
Tim Buckley - Song to the Siren
Yeah, Iām more into thisā¦ Who knows, some metal for the LNF soundtrack would be cool!
Wo mans sky
No one skyers
No boy sky
No souls cloud
The sky noone wants
I love that Andreja and Carl scored their own points
For those who want to see experimental version of Omega without making the switch to experimental, I figured Kanaju will be a relaxing and chilled guide through the voyage.
CONGRATS!!!
Thatās awesome Mac, Congratulations! Keep em cominā
