Yeah, but, when you’re addicted to chess, you’re called a prodigy, and when you’re addicted to WoW or D&D, it’s all “waste of time” and “get a job” 
That’s the difference.
I don’t count D&D as a board game, because the board is not a defining feature, I’ve seen people wing it with just dice. Even a table is optional.
