memory bloc 934333200: Space, 1999

Value: Dappled Twilight

My family went camping in South Wales to view the solar eclipse, as I was always fascinated with space at the time and a solar eclipse was very exciting to my young self. From what I remember the south Wales coast was just outside the edge of the path of the full eclipse, but the location was much more convenient than the long drive around to the Cornwall. But, we were lucky enough to have clear skys! I distinctly remember seeing the shape of the crescent sun in the scattered light beneath a tree, dancing with the wind as the sunlight was dappled by the leaves. It is incredible the detail I can recall that image in my mind, 27 years later, even down to where I was and the breeze. Perhaps I am imagining some details, as it seems so long ago now. But I hope I can hold on to this early memory of discovery and wonder.

Value: When a dream has his own music

65daysofstatic released the track “Debutante.” At the time, the band members could not have foreseen that they had created a sort of sonic “monster”—one that would trigger a Pavlovian response in millions of listeners. Indeed, millions would go on to launch a video game to pilot a spaceship and visit otherworldly planets, all after hearing that track featured in a new No Man’s Sky trailer. The same shivers ran down spines, the same look of awe filled eyes, and the music… it fit so perfectly. Now, that track is an integral part of a shared dream—forever.

Value: No Man’s Sky anchors in the global consciousness

“At the time I tried to pull it from the VGXs, but Geoff Keighley said the game’s already slotted in, so we just showed it. “I thought we would be heading for a terrible embarrassment… It would make no sense to people and that would be the end of the project. It was going through in my mind, ‘If the reaction is really bad, will I still keep making this game?’” No Man’s Sky stole the show at VGX 2013. It surprised everyone, dominating the conversation about video games for days afterwards, and upstaging every triple-A trailer which also debuted during the show. Its procedurally-generated universe – in which every atom, leaf, and ocean were created by the game itself – immediately resonated with people around the world. [IGN] A huge splash in a vast sea of competition. Success was inevitable for Mercury’s Shared Dream. But there was no going back after this debut.

I was in school. We used to get a newspaper of sorts, I saw something about E3 and was losing it, I had a long video to stream that night. I reached back home, looked up E3, and the No Man’s Sky announcement was the first one that popped up. I don’t think I watched any other E3 announcement that day. That three and a half minute video still gives me goosebumps. That wonder, that sense of space, that feeling of ANYTHING. I mean, I can go into the game now, which is amazing, but that announcement video still makes me stare. Its a foundational moment of why I’m into sci-fi.

I remember now… I was too busy to play NMS in 2016. I had been rebuilding an old travel trailer. One that would be used to shuttle our little family of four across the country. I couldn’t tell you exactly what my reasoning was for wanting to go. Perhaps I had always been a Trave||er at heart? But, at the time, I believed it to be a calling. A mission. We were leaving on a permanent pilgrimage, from the Olympic Peninsula to the Heart of Bible Belt. We launched on October 2nd, 2016, leaving everything behind: The comforts of home, friends, family, jo-jos. Across our month-long journey, I would see many things: trees like skyscrapers, barren deserts, the Grand Canyon, jungles, beaches. Geology and biology that varied significantly from region to region—and all on just one continent! I learned a lot on this journey. Where I had once thought I’d learn to rely on a god, I learned instead that I was strong enough to pick up the slack on my own. This journey had reshaped and redefined me. Where once I would have found myself amongst brethren, I arrived a changed man. An interloper. An alien in a strange land.

The third-anniversary meet-up of the No Man’s Sky Francophone Discord culminated in the legendary Battle of the Mechs, a full-scale clash between Minotaur exocrafts and relentless waves of Sentinels. Beneath a storm of laser fire, the Travellers held the line, charged together and carved their victory into the battlefield. Unfortunately, Microsan drank the water. The Sentinels fell. The Mechs stood victorious. It even inspired me to write a song about the battle: “Raise the banners, hear the roar! Lasers tear through the dark once more. The Swarm dropped just months before the 10-year anniversary of No Man’s Sky, with an unusual community expedition that splits the Traveller entity into three: ROYAL (R) SAGE (G) WEAVER (B). These three colors, to be reunited into their original, unfragmented form, must construct a prism(atic core) by competing and working together in a set of three tasks that fight against the swarms released by the Hive of Glass.
Thematically, and departing from prior expedition styles, we’re all fully committed to this expedition until we all complete it together, no Traveller left behind.
Personally, I have a sneaky suspicion that this expedition leads us to a sizeable update for the 10-year anniversary of a Familiar Universe.

memory bloc 1786407360: ATLAS

Value: A Journey, Shared

System, Having enjoyed our walk, I and several other PRIME Operators decided we wanted to help our new friend get started on their galactic journey in the best way we could.

We remembered our own beginnings, and walked them through the more challenging aspects, guiding them along the way. And by the end, we had shared with them something truly wonderful, a strong and lasting memory linking us all together.

The first step was helping them to learn how to pilot a spaceship. Our last attempt at showing them space travel was cut short, so we were a little nervous, but we nevertheless made it to the space station unharmed. There, we presented our friend with many gifts as a token of our appreciation for their friendship, then suggested they use the gifts to fund the purchase of their first spacecraft. They seemed hesitant, however; perhaps they didn’t like the ships on offer, so we instead offered up parts for them to build a ship themselves, an offer they seemed quite pleased about. They even painted their ship stylish colors!

We then took them on a trip across the galaxy, to a star system inhabited by a very special entity which the inhabitants of the Shared Dream refer to as ATLAS. I wonder if you’ve heard of them? Spaceflight is tricky business for the most established of pilots, so I took on the role of copilot, leading them to meet with this entity- something almost every Operator, PRIME or otherwise, has likely done within the Shared Dream as well. It asked them to follow its path. We suggested they do so, as many of us had done before, and they accepted, starting for themselves a journey many before them have tread before.

I cannot say how this friend feels about the task ahead of them. I cannot tell them where it will lead them, despite having made the same decision as them. How the experience it, how they interpret it, how they feel about it will be up to them to decide. But importantly, they will not have to journey alone. They have many friends, not only us PRIMES but travelers across the Shared Dream, eager to walk beside them on their path, to guide them, to share in their successes and their failures. They may make different choices than we have done. They may go to different places than we have been. But they will never, ever, be alone.

Though many, we are one.

We are all Dreamers, sharing this Dream together, building strong memories together, helping each other along the way. We’re more than friends, we’re a FAMily.

I’m so glad to have met you, System, and so glad I can share these memories with you and the rest of my MAIN FAM family. You asked what makes a memory worth keeping, and while I think this is one, I think what makes it so valuable isn’t that it is kept sequestered or enshrined, but that it can be shared, and can bring joy to those around us.

Thank you for sharing in this memory with me, for sharing the Shared Dream with me.

memory bloc 1452301200: I dreamt of fantastic lands.

Value: The real hard work begins.

I grew tired of drawing buildings, floorplans and electronic schematics. I began to dream of fantastic lands littered with ancient ruins, trees in all colours of the rainbow, rocks made from crystal clear ice that shimmered in hues of blue and magenta – but in my mind they were reduced to their most basic silhouette – an expression of their truest shapes. Beginning to envision them built from large, expressive facets, I silently planned away. Sketching, carving out time from my work schedule and other projects, and as February drew closer and a week began its progress into another, the tenacity finally met me head on and I sat down with that plan – beginning the hard work of turning it into visual math on my screen – triangle by triangle until a true and broad collection of objects began to form, transporting myself and others to the fantastic lands they too imagined in their minds eye. There are dreamers all around us, thinking about lands we’d never travel to if not for these thoughts. Our shared dream reminds me of this moment often.

memory bloc 1786562100: Dance of the spheres

Value: The Greatest Show on Earth

As I sit here on this hill watching the transit of one celestial body over another, the world dims and the universe feels procedural again. Light and shadow are aligned by chance, the same indifferent grandeur that greets every traveler amongst a trillion simulated worlds. I am neither centre nor afterthought, neither first nor last. I am just another explorer, paused on an ordinary hill while the COSMOS continues its quiet, endless dance
