I didn’t know they were called this but did instantly recognise it (at a laymans level of general knowledge).
I kind of guessed at the approximate size from that rather uninformed point of view, which is where I now realise that I didn’t actually know.
Have to admit I hadn’t even considered the planetary glow obscuring background light sources. That’s too much arty sci-fi images & not enough genuine real life imagery on my part. (I don’t really follow any NASA or other agency activities other than the amazing, recent JWST images).
One just needs to visualise that rather famous Earthrise photo to be reminded that the ambient refection obscures background points of light in these circumstances.
For some reason my mind just jumped to a rather random impression that your structure was possibly a much larger than ‘normal’ size (as in some liberties were being taken regarding real-life engineering restrictions) & that it is orbiting a fair way off a quite-a-bit-larger than earth planet, possibly in a distant solar system. That sort of contrasted with the sharp light reflection on the inner curve which is where my previous comment regarding ‘little’ came from.
I suppose I was a bit presumptuous myself in that once I knew the image was based in a game environment, I disregarded the fact that it might be still following set engineering rules.
I haven’t been very active on this forum recently so I’m somewhat behind on some of the newest topics, including your game.
Don’t take anything I said as a criticism but rather as nothing more than a single individual’s suggestions regarding how extra details might help add some ‘story’. The fact you are creating a game, testing artwork & willingly putting it out there for discussion is well outside my own capabilities so take anything I say with a pinch of salt.
Well, for a stanford torus, it would honestly be on the small side, but it would still be several orders of magnitude larger than what we’d consider “normal” size for a space station today, so I guess you’re not wrong…
Had another go. Not more detail yet. Tried some greebling, and it went into a direction I absolutely don’t want it to go, so I was back at fiddling with painting, lighting, contrast, blur and noise to try to get something closer. I also added some stars to the background.
So this is what it looks now. The much lower contrast makes it appear less dramatic, but it goes much more into the kind of “painted” look/feel I’m trying to aim at…
Just got home from watching one of my brothers perform in Of Mice and Men. He was the crew boss. Very good but of course, a very sad story.
Was kind of amazed at how many people in the room had obviously never heard the story. Prolly don’t know who John Steinbeck was either…
I think I made this during my absence from etarc, and it’s one of the last things I made before the lockdown took my whatever away, but I hope to get back on the saddle soon. I’d just gotten a new Keyboard and some softsynths and this was the first little idea that came out. No guesses as to where I took the name from. (I only ever mix my stuff for headphones before abandoning them so they are recommended)
I came across this little oddity the other day.
A mouldy mushroom.
When I first saw it, there were just a couple of little patches like what might appear on bread…but when I returned with a camera a couple of days later, the whole cap was fuzzy.
I had no idea fungi could get fungi.
Weird
EDIT: Well, I took the time to educate myself a little & it seems that this is a fungi-specific, parrasitic mould.
It preys on it’s own kind.
After linking a particular post in this topic for a fellow Etarcian I then found myself re-reading hundreds of posts from the last couple of years & effectively wasting a good part of my day.
No regrets
It seems a few of us have fallen into creative lulls of late, which is a sticky mire & hard to climb out of.
I have gotten motivated now though but it has been necessary chores & tasks more than indulgent artiness that has kept me moving.
I’ve spent some time thinning out my shed accumulations, sold some things, fixed some things, piled up some junk in the trailer ready to be dumped & generally made my areas more free flowing.
Too many projects in various stages of completion had created a congested workspace resulting in nothing getting anywhere.
Now the majority of the mess is gone & the broken things are fixed, I have more free space to do the more enjoyable tasks.
Much of the clutter was from tasks awaiting the completion of another task. Objects needing a simple part or adjustment that had ended up on the back-burner with a dozen others piled up in front.
I guess I view my workshop shed in the same way some might view a studio. It’s my little zen-zone where I do creative ‘me’ things (as well as do repairs).
Once it gets cluttered I just can’t get into it.
A few nice days had me opening doors up & shuffling things for space & then getting stuck into the fixes.
I still have a few ‘project’ bikes ( & I always will because they’re addictive ) but once they have semi-flat tyres & sad batteries they suddenly become heavy cumbersome nuisences when it come to moving them across a slushy yard to an alternate shed.
Other property machines got serviced & little fixes sorted & then each in turn returned to its proper place in other sheds…not piled up in my workshop.
Was soothing to feel my workshop gradually feel open again. I still have some finer cleaning to do (& lets face it: sheds are not pristine labaratory environments) but I’d like to get it as organised & as sorted as possible before the cycle begins anew.
Alas, I think ‘scupture’ will be my next arty venture but not in the fine art of pottery. Nope. My property access is becoming a rutted mess & needs my delicate reshaping by means of some earthmoving equipment.
So thats been me lately.
Returning my ‘studio’ to order, sorting out my many projects & planning ahead towards some substantial ‘scupture’ work.
I have a bad habit of always looking for the next thing to try. I really want to do rug weaving. No idea why. Maybe the texture and feel of so much fabric scrunched together. Plus I have stacks of fabric just begging to be used. But first, I need a frame done up properly.
Also, really need to get cabinets installed in my craft room. It is a mess.
I just bought myself a painting I am familiar with from childhood. The artist lived right around the corner of the house I was born at. That is likely why I recall the painting so well, as I have been visiting quite a few times as a child. I unexpectedly came across it on a Dutch online marketplace last year. Considering they tried selling 2 paintings together, I was not keen on spending all that much. I then considered getting in touch to ask if they would be ok with selling them separately. Plenty of time passed and I kept thinking about it. This week I got a notification about the item expiring soon (again). Now I started to get worried, possibly regretting not taking the opportunity. I messaged the seller a couple of days ago, and after some back and forth, got a deal I was happy with.
Very happy actually, because not only have I known the artists (she sadly passed away last August at 93 yo), but it also depicts a location that is very dear to me. I used to live right around the corner during the mid 90s for several years. I actually met the artist again during that time, at an art market nearby, where she could be found regularly. I might have seen the painting there again as well. The seller actually bought it there about 20 years ago. Feels like this artwork was just meant to cross my path for some reason.
Oh and I have been busy myself as well, with various projects. Been getting familiar with my sewing machine by making curtains and pillows from a huge roll of thick fabric I had lying around for ages. Was once given to me and although not quite my choice of fabric, not bad at all either.
Then I finally got a cheap solution for hanging my large scale acrylics. Initially thought of folding the sheet along both edges and sewing a hem to put the pipes through, but the ones I have made are not quite suitable for it considering the location of my signature and the illustration itself. So I attached some loops instead, which works good enough for me.
Not quite sure I want the black light to be mounted permanent, but had to see the result once more. Removed it again for now.
(picture could have been better, even though hard to capture the effect well to begin with)
I should be able to paint reasonably well this way, but first I want to practise on the canvas some more. This requires new acrylic paint, as the paint I had, did not work out too well, but good enough to get my itch going again with some messing about. Not even close to finished and I do not like what is there either. Ran out of good paint too and gave up on it for now.
The upholstery might actually be up next instead. I might not be able to get all the required materials for it yet, but I already have enough to make a good start and get the remaining requirements next month for the armchair at least.
@sheralmyst I looked for a cover button press, but dangit, a proper one is actually quite expensive. And even a cheaper version, feels like a waste for likely just a single time use. I hope the way cheaper manual cover buttons from ‘Prym’ will do well enough, else I may have to try find a place willing to lend me one or press a couple for me instead
Yes. That is the problem. To buy or not to buy, knowing you may never use it again.
Nice job though! All looks great.
If using buttons on pillows, you could always opt for large funky buttons. There are so many to choose from.
Love how the blacklight changes the whole vibe of that cityscape.
I’m in awe of your sewing skills.
As a ‘man of the land’, my skills are limited to button replacements, rudimentary rip repairs & a bit of saddle-stitch when fixing a leather jacket.
I’m afraid pillows & curtains are out of my league.
There’s a couple of skills I lament not learning in my life & one of them is driving a sewing machine properly.
Good to hear your shed having become a studio of sorts I can relate to accumulating projects getting in the way. I’d wish for a larger workspace/storage, instead of my apartment with a small ‘unit’ downstairs. Must feel great indeed getting it organised and sorted again, allowing for new opportunities to come to fruition. I have been postponing a proper cleanup in that unit. It’s full of ‘everything’ and no longer organised. I used to be able to find what i’d need at the moment, but I am increasingly often finding myself searching instead.
Good luck with your ‘scupture’ work, seems like a good time to do now. My gardening skills are limited to growing some herbs on a balcony, not much of a landscape to ‘architect’ here
