Project skyscraper / no man's sky arg

spock1 on the NMScord mentioned something which would probably be a good PSA to sticky to the intro page:

For those new to ARGs, which I have seen a few people say they are:
DO NOT GO TO REAL LOCATIONS UNLESS EXPLICITLY SPECIFIED BY THE PM.
DO NOT CALL REAL PHONE NUMBERS/CONTACT REAL EMAIL IDS UNLESS EXPLICITLY SPECIFIED BY THE PM.
DO NOT DO ANYTHING ILLEGAL WHILE LOOKING INTO THE ARG.
DO NOT MESS WITH GOVERNMENT ENTITIES.

Much appreciated, I am working on posting something along those lines, but yes, great basic ARG advise!

Edit: I’ll just copy that (for now anyways) and include ‘Spock’ for source as good measure.

Update:

Looks good, included in the pinned info for this forum category

We need to watch that event phase to see if it changes. Nice info.

It seems like someone saved the project-scryscraper page on the WayBackMachine on May 6

Oh interesting, how’d you go about setting it up? Would love to add that to my toolset for the site

A few days ago, user @XREDXCLOUDX ran some of the images through an AI, and presented us with the results – in a somewhat bizarre fantasy format.

Their effort wasn’t taken seriously. They had believed the AI, and used no critical judgement at all.
However, my attention was caught by the phrase “we see your connection” – which is all too similar to events in the game. I decided to dig a little further.

It turns out, the hex strings "0A 41 52 43 48 49 54 45 43 54 5F’ and “0A 49 54 54 4C 55 5E” when converted to ASCII correspond to “ARCHITECT” and “ITTLU^”

The string “V2Ugc2VIIH1vdXIgQ29ubmVjdGIvbg==”, when converted from Base 64 to ASCII, gave “We seH }our Connectb/n”

It’s not exact, but I suspect something got lost in the AI representation. There’s definitely something in the hex and base 64 code the AI presented.

So I set about examining the file TRACE.JPG in a hex editor. Trouble is, I can’t find these strings anywhere. Maybe they’re cleverly obfuscated. Maybe the AI invented them. Maybe someone with better crypto skills needs to take a look.

A Warning – we’ve been experiencing problems with image files being converted to WEBP format when you download them. Conversion to WEBP involves re-encoding the file, and any data hidden in it will be lost. If you’re going to poke around in the file code, make sure you have the original .JPG version.

Report submitted in the interests of Citizen Science.

Do we know if the conversion is by the browser? If so then downloading with curl should work.

Here’s the instruction manual text: Tearaway Thomas - Amiga Instructions, Docs - Lemon Amiga

A PLANET SITUATED 16
BITS AWAY FROM THE BLACK HOLE CALLED AGES AND JUST A LITTLE LEFT OF THE
STAR SYSTEM MAGADRIVER BUT STILL REMAINING NORTH OF THE DENSELY POPULATED
ANAGRAM.

Most definitely a browser habit. Ways to circumvent and get to the actual source may vary, but most certainly advised. With any research, it is important to work with source material.

Correct me if I’m wrong but, I’m fairly certain all that’s doing is writing to the console whenever you post a message yourself and reporting on the event generated by the message sent via the console, and isn’t reporting anything from the site itself, so the event phase here would refer to the message you just sent via the console and it’s status while executing

If the eventHandler logs a message posted by a site component though, that’d be significant, and be something to look out for.

Yeah that’s true, didn’t recall that
It doesn’t mean anything
I recall that I found a worker js file where there was a function to create a worker, maybe that could be triggered.
Deleted my post not to confuse anyone

16 +16 = 32 :stuck_out_tongue:

Or rather, 16x2=32

:person_shrugging:

The number 16 isnt just important to the games lore but also the Skyscraper engine that NMS runs on.

E.g 16Âč⁶ = 18 quintillion. The engine itself runs on base-16, everything is seeded with a 16 digit hexadecimal string, etc.

A lot of NMS lore is in essence a parallel to the games development journey and how it has grown and changed over the years. Sometimes even teasing its future (i.e travellers in Atlas Rises 2017 were talking about what players would be able to do when NMS next arrived in 2018, when the boundaries truly fell).

I reckon we’ll be seeing a lot of 16s in various (in stellar? :stuck_out_tongue: ) multitudes across this ARG.

Hmmmm, gonna try keep an eye out for some Anagrams, just to be on the safe side.

For anyone who wants to mess around with the images, you can download the original JPGs from the sitemap:

https://project-skyscraper.com/image-sitemap-1.xml

They shouldn’t get converted to WEBP this way.

I did try and get one from the country codes. I got BRIDGE and CAMBRIDGE but couldn’t get anything with the remaining letters. So that’s probably a dead end, unless there’s a name in there I’m missing.

Just a reminder that any number can be interpreted as a unix timestamp. Doesn’t necessarily mean that it is meant as such.

Cross post from narrative, these docs of the NMS story/lore taken directly from the game and bookmarked with chapters/sections might be useful to some folk. This is my main DUMP file that I was pulling from and not the stand alone curated versions I had been working on (wanted to print out and make hardback copies for my shelves), so it has everything and some of it has yet to be formatted, its 680 pages in total so keep this in mind when viewing from smartphone devices etc.

Hell, who knows? That might be the connection @the_architect is waiting for :eyes:

Small side note, Martin Griffitths liked NoMansZine’s post about the ARG. Could mean some slight acknowledgement, or just a nod that they’re aware of things (as y’all probably let em know with the category creation).
