Music Tastes among ETARCers?

I remember being a child and hearing this… it was not until nearly a decade had passed before I found the name.
This is the most Epic IMO. I imagine this would be playing everywhere loudly if i were the first person to ever shoot lasers out my eyes. LoL.

Yes! I got to see Trans-Siberian Orchestra do “O Fortuna” live. lots of fire! It was at “The Lost Christmas Eve” as a sneak peak of “Night Castle”.

To this day, I often find this song stuck in my head. It’s one that never seems to fade away. :sunglasses:
Oh and can I say I really miss MTV…the original MTV.

The correct title is “Fortuna imperatrix mundi” - Fortuna, ruler of the world. Note that Fortuna in the latin here is used as a noun, so “fortune” would be a mistranslation. It’s the godess of luck and fate that is addressed. Makes me chuckle everytime I hear the track as a backdrop to some mime or stuff like that in a church

Though I guess the fact that it complains about said godess rather than worshipping her reduces the irony just a liiiiitle bit.

Ever been intrigued by an album cover?

I sure was with the cover of Vangelis’ album Hypothesis (1978).

Of course I sure enjoyed the music as well and still do. My stepfather has always had a great music taste and a huge collection of vinyl. Will have to look for this album some day …

The cover art was created by Angus McKie and

‘borrowed’ from illustration he drew for a series of novels by SF author Brian Stableford, featuring the spacecraft Hooded Swan, mentioned in the books.

The illustration is actually from the novel ‘Promised Land’ in the ‘Hooded Swan’ series.

I have always been intrigued by Sci-Fi art, especially the classics. My mother has always been reading loads of science fiction books and as a child I loved watching the covers and fantasise about those worlds. I can’t recall if she had the above book as well, but it wouldn’t surprise me. Never been much of a reader myself sadly enough though.

A few months ago I found some ‘likely’ influence for No Man’s Sky with the Terran Trade Authority, which was an illustrated Sci-Fi space art series of books created by Stewart Cowley (1978-1980). I then found out that one of the books also contained an almost full page illustration of the above mentioned artwork by Angus McKie in the below ‘Spacecraft 2000-2100 AD’ book. Not only that, these books have loads of wonderful classic illustrations, telling an interesting story about the future in space in an ‘official handbook’ kind of way.

I right away fell in love with what I saw and decided to do an online search to buy a few. Sadly enough they are not always ‘cheap’ and somewhat rare to find. Then about 3-4 weeks ago I finally found two I really wanted to add to my collection for a reasonable price and ordered them. I may look for the remaining two as well, just for completion sake …

Spacecraft 2000-2100 AD :link: Internet Archive

SpaceWreck: Ghost Ships and Derelicts of Space :link: Internet Archive

Funny coincidence how the Desolation update then released July 16th, while I was looking forward to receiving these two books, very fitting

This weekend the last of the two books finally arrived. I am really pleased and will likely find some inspiration for some new creations.

Lucky to have picked up a copy of the one Hooded Swan series at a pre-owned book market.

I actually had recently designed a refreshed version of my little forum avatar, with my white ship hovering over some firery wreckage (inspired somewhat by recent global events & the rumours of something dark coming in NMS), then Desolation dropped & it suddenly felt a bit corny to use it. :no_mouth:

Nice, another book cover by Angus McKie, which is actually present in ‘Spacecraft 2000 to 2100 AD’ as well. It has an interesting description to go with it

yeah would love to get hold of copies of those space/sci-fi “journals”. that 70’speriod was really the golden age for sci-fi stories and art - neo-romantic/nostalgic.

Excellent cover. That was one of my faves in high school. (though it came out several years before I was in HS) (don’t want to be any older than I already am) :upside_down_face:

For the moment this one is stuck in my head. (Not just this song, but this is the most catchy) Basically all 3 albums are one big storyline (<sarcasm>slightly over the top, ever so slightly.</sarcasm>)

Edit: my sarcasm tags had to be escaped.

I disagree with that last bit! :stuck_out_tongue:

But I guess nothing can ever beat the cosmic rage of astral dwarfs from aberdeen… They really should have dedicated an entire song to them!

(Also, my NMS freighter is named “Epic rage of furious thunder”)

<sarcasm>Since nothing is happening with No Man’s Sky currently</sarcasm>

@jedidia you’ll probably know this one too :

Those lyrics, again, not very serious.
