Beautiful. Thank you for choosing to share it with us, MAIN FAM.

Here’s to your DAD, who now soars where we cannot, but will never be forgotten. o7

Just came from there after doing a little foundational work on my own base – that’s a lovely memorial, fantastic spot for quiet reflection. Glad to be your neighbor!

Got a bit too tired last night after family time and the longest hair appointment of my life. I’ll come by and put a base down tonight!

And I’ll walk where I’ll be shaded by the trees,
by a meadow of green,
for about a mile,
I’m heading to town…
in style.

The idea of anchoring in the MAIN FAM System as a civilization has been growing in Operator circles, so I’d like any clarifications fellow civ-affiliated Operators (especially @7101334!) could provide about the process, since my knowledge of civ-making is outdated by several years

In particular, maintaining a presence on the fandom wiki was considered crucial for being a recognized civ. Now that fandom seems to be less favourable, and major civs like GHub seem to be hosting their own wikis on Miraheze, what’s the meta here for recognition exactly? Does each civ need to set up their own wikis? Is using a wiki still required, or can recognized civs get by with hosting their information on their own, non-wiki websites?

Any and all input is appreciated!

WIP around this ruin on Planet DAD; just want to point out how well the Atlas-65 decal matches, like it was meant to be there

There’s really no special recognition process for starting a civ.

Back in the old Fandom days, which you’re referring to, there were basically two levels of recognition: Fandom recognition, which iirc required having your capital system and planet documented, and Federation recognition, which required a little more than that (Mostly because civs are very easy to start, but harder to maintain, and we had a problem of civs applying and then going inactive. So we wanted to see a little bit higher of an effort threshold than Fandom required.)

But as you said, Fandom is largely disfavored these days. The Federation, while technically still an active alliance, has had no meaningful activity in years. (Anyone could endeavor to change that, but no one has, and I’m personally not inclined to either.)

So there’s no real authority anymore, which is maybe for the best. I’d say the common minimum threshold for qualifying as a civilization is having some page (or video, in the case of YouTube civs) somewhere which explains what your civ is all about and where to find it.

So you could start your own website, or you could use Fandom (if you don’t mind drowning in ads). There are two No Man’s Sky Miraheze Wikis which makes things incredibly confusing - one is minimally maintained but still active, and that’s Ertosi’s NMS Miraheze for discoveries specifically. That would probably be the more appropriate one to put your civ’s content on. There’s also the general NMS Miraheze maintained by ApexFatality (Hub member and well-established NMS community member, also a mod for r/NoMansSkyTheGame). Technically that one is for documenting actual game content excluding discoveries - upgrades, modules, materials, languages, things like that. Imo it’s much better maintained than the Discoveries wiki, but it’s probably the less-appropriate choice.

You could ask Miraheze if you could start your own wiki but, at the time the Galactic Hub started our own, we had tens of thousands of preexisting wiki articles. So we had a very good basis to argue that we need our own wiki. I’m genuinely not sure how they’d respond to an upstart civ requesting your own wiki… I would encourage it if you think you can manage the associated effort, but if you do choose that route, I’d emphasize the longstanding nature of this community in general rather than emphasizing the ‘newness’ of the Operator civ. Miraheze is a nonprofit, so they’re more selective about who they allow to start wikis. There are no ads and no fees, so it’s purely a cost to them to allow people to use the service. Though, as I understand it, they’re pretty decently funded these days.

Let me know if the Galactic Hub can help you guys at all in any way! I’ll drop a base in the Operator system someday lol, busy times recently.

I managed to travel to Ned, and build a little base. It was incredibly difficult with only one hand. Having put down some roots, I’ll leave it for a while until I can do more.

Oh, I’d also recommend that any Operator Space (or whatever the name will be) citizens / residents look into the Deep Thought Collective and r/NMSPortals.

If CSD / Operators are science, DTC was alchemy. Their big goal was to open Portals before it was actually possible to open them. The civ isn’t around anymore, but that’s what this reminds me of a little bit.

Just a bit of history that I think some of you might find interesting / entertaining.

Just visited your base and I love it !

This porch surrounded by vegetation on the surface of an empty world, frozen as if resisting the passage of time to never be forgotten.

Never did a base make such a strong impression on me.
