I think it’s evident with Star Citi- wait… what was Bethesdas space game called again? Starfield! Let me start over…

I think it’s evident with Star CIti, crumbs, StarFIELD that Bethesda’s engine has been pushed and modified as far as it can go. Sometimes developers grow tired of working on the same game for years that is essentially just a new mission/level pack. I think that’s what happened with HL and it’s episodic releases, the team lost motivation for the series and rather than release a lacklustre uninspired entry that tarnishes the rest, the best thing to do is let it sleep, wait for tech to advance enough that you can feel like you can be innovative within that games world again.

Half Life Alyx wasn’t the Episode 3 we were expecting but it certainly fulfils that role as a bridge between the last HL game and the next, and it’s certainly a lot better than the “more things to shoot and grav gun in source engine 2” map and story we would have gotten. The only downside is the tech level entry price. But that is my relationship with half life. I have to wait 5-8 years before I can afford a PC to play the latest entry XD

I think bethesda are doing a similar thing with Elder Scrolls. Fallout is acquired IP so it’s not as near or as dear to them as their actual baby. I think most of the development time on the next Elder Scrolls has been spent making an entirely new engine, not just tacking on to the Engines that powered more or less every Bethesda game for the last 15 or so years.

They’ve done all they can with an Elder Scrolls in its current form, the MMO is a steady form of income and scratches the itch for those who are into that kinda thing and want more ES. I think once the tech parity for consoles and PC gets to a point where they can do the things they think the next evolution of their Engine should be able to do, they’ll move out of engine and mechanics experimentation and into full blown development.

I’m sure some form of the game has existed in various shapes and forms, as is the case with this kind of long form slow baked development. With the way trends change in the industry, no doubt ES6 has had features and ideas creep in and out of its existence during its time in the primordial oven.

It’s not hording the games so much as it is being a little protective of the game and it’s legacy. It’s the kind of territory that can keep a team constantly second guessing itself so the possibility of making huge mistakes is very high, gotta tread carefully. Showing that teaser I dunno how many years ago was a dumb mistake though XD

Oh and Welcome to the forum Krang

I picked up a ps5 in February on sale fairly cheap. I’m not having buyers remorse or anything, theres no way I could afford the PS5 Pro then or even now had I continued to save.

The 30th anniversary edition got me right in the nostalgia but still, I can live without it, I’ve never had a special edition console and I’ve never lost sleep over em.

But this usb-c cable that comes with the ps5 pro special edition? I would eat cats and dogs and perpetuate a myth for a political campaign if it meant I could have one.

I will sell my integrity and then my soul.

So I’m hoping they sell them separately so I can just buy one with normal currency.

Is there anything special about that particular one?

@sheralmyst
I think @toddumptious is in love with the about-to-go-on-pre-order 30th Anniversary PS1 themed PS5 console’s cable.
Styled to look like it’s from the ancient times of long ago.

“You’re livin’ in the past, man!”

It’s completely for the aesthetic even if it is sort of impractical.

There are two usb-c ports on the front of my PS5 and I don’t even care that this stupid thing will cover both if plugged into either XD

I’m happy to see everyone else just wants the cable as a separate purchase too, maybe some day it will be a reality.

I can see people who bought Pro’s selling these for 100-200 online to make back the difference of a regular PS5 '^ _ ^

I was going to say it’s certainly a lot nicer than the PS4 25TH Anniversary Edition they brought out, thinking it wasn’t that long ago…

It was the 20th Anniversary edition… :fallen_leaf: :skull:

I do not like the external BR drive though.

Made sure I got the ps5 with the disc drive because digital media keeps changing platforms/subscriptions but my physical media just stays right there on the shelf.

I was also finally able to get a PS5 and an XBox. Made sure they both had drives. I love to replay games and I have a lot of discs including NMS. I refuse to purchase a digital version of a physical copy I already own

Elite has its x-th anniversary and they are giving away a new PC version of the original game for free.

I went to the Frontier Store, and to download it, you have to go through the shop interface. Which means providing a shipping address and a payment method. Maybe other people buy so many items from the Frontier Store that they have that preconfigured (and Frontier has all that data already), but I don’t. :person_shrugging:

I wonder whether I saw Elite as a kid (e.g. in a PC store) somewhere and would recognise it? We definitely didn’t have it (nor a PC) so I certainly never played Elite.

I only remember the thought that (if I learned maths and programming) I could make an infinite universe with spaceships and planets out of lines and triangles. Other people see games and dream of creating hyper realistic “StarCitizen” and NMS – and of course my brain was like… “Triangles! That’s where it’s at!” :person_facepalming: :joy:

I mean, triangles are where it’s at. Even in todays graphics, we’re doing everything in triangles. We just use a couple tens of thousands per model nowadays as opposed to a handful…

The Egyptians were the first to attempt to build Polygons out of triangles, unfortunately videogames had yet to be invented and they didn’t want to wait around for them to exist.

So they built mock ups out of local stone in the hopes that future people would remember their endeavours into real time 3d rendering.

Some of the ruling class were so excited about the release of the Super Famicom in 1000s of years that they entombed themselves within the walls in a desperate attempt to cheat time and death.

Truthfully they were all led astray by grifters promising them eternal life with this hip new technology known as Embalming.

And that’s why to this day, all videogames are haunted by angry Egyptian ghosts.

Oh cool, I can’t wait to try it out.

I also did not realise the originals were on steam, for a moment I thought they were free too.

it’s just the “dlc” that’s free, and the DLC just gives you options to play the games in their classic form, a defunct iOs Android version, or the current 2015 version the DLC is for. Was completely unaware any of this had happened.

Going to resist getting these versions and hold out for Twinsens Quest. The demo of first chapter will be nostalgic as it was a demo of the first chapter I first played on an OfficialPlaystationMagazine UK Demo Disc.

I am busy saving Hyrule and fighting like a girl. :high_heel:

And I am really enjoying it. Although I can use Link’s sword, I run out of the energy needed to use it, fairly quickly. This results in using it only when really needed. The rest of the time I duplicate items and have them do the work for me. I can duplicate anything and anyone I have defeated. This means I can use the enemies I have encountered to do all the work for me. However, not every item or enemy I can duplicate, works. Certain things work in certain cases.
This new approach to battle while working my way across the map and thru the classic Zelda dungeons, has given this game a fresh new feeling.
I applaud it.

I know we’ve heard it all before - but some apparently serious rumours are swirling regarding development of Half-Life 3, and a supposed major update to Half-Life 2

Considering what Alyx did with it’s ending, it certainly seems any HL3 news these days could be fairly concrete. I certainly see Alyx as a hl2-episode 3, just not in the way it would have originally happened.

I also feel like they’ll never actually release a game titled HL3 now. Rather it will have a subtitle. There’s too much weight behind the myth of HL3 now to ever deliver and meet what are now ridiculous expectations from the wider gaming community

but I do believe whatever name it has, it will be the third full adventure in Gordon’s story.

I just kept telling myself it’ll be another fifteen years so as not to set myself up for disappointment waiting on a reveal :joy:

I am ready for some VR Crowbar Bashy.

Apparemtly (so ye olde rumour mill do say), Valve had already made the basis of another game to follow Alyx, set in a slightly earlier version of City 17. Then they decided to drop the whole VR thing, and re-set the assets as a co-op MMO called Deadlock (in beta testing now).

I’ve seen the previews. It certainly looks like City 17.

[edit] Deadlock does not appear to be based in the Half-Life lore. Whilst the devs seem to have recycled Half-Life assets, Deadlock involves teams with silly super powers (like, there’s a guy who turns himself into a tornado). Sort of Pokemon meets Marvel Universe. Also, whilst the architecture is Half-Life, the character animations owe more to Dick Tracy. It seems Valve are going for the 9 to 12 year old market.

Dick Tracy?

I fixed it.

You ought to know by now, nothing ever goes out of fashion these days. Everything is endlessly recycled.
