Games and Game-Related old and new

So Starfield states that it requires SSD. This is not an issue for me because that it is what I use, always. But why is it required, is the question? The size? The game is 128GB…

It might be relying heavily on texture streaming to make sure what is rendered in view looks as best it can and also might want the game to feel seamless between the cutscenes that land you on planets or bring you in to space to the point the bare minimum read-write requirement for the game is above what a HDD can do.

Does it say it is a necessary requirement or just recommended? I’ve noticed a lot of modern PC releases where ps5/seriesSX are lowest common denominator suggest you install to SSD.

I got my first SSD for my pc in November and I’m glad I did. Windows went form a 15 minute boot up to a 2 minute boot up <3 Bottlenecked by my mobo/cpu now. I’m still on AM3 socket architecture so my CPU is last of its gen, 11 years old now I think, still a beast though. AMD FX8350 3.5 ghz 8 core overclocked to 4.5.

That will be the next upgrade, mobo/cpu replacement. Only one game so far has told me straight up no, you need a new cpu that does this new technique. It was Uncharted 4 which was quite surprising because every other ps4 First Party port had worked no problem but its a sign that soon I wont be able to play the latest releases '^ _ ^

It’s probably mostly to prevent people from complaining about loading times. I mean, I’m playing NMS off a good old turntable, and it takes me up to 5 minutes to fire the thing up (no, that’s not exagerated…).

XD

I’m grateful I grew up in the times of lengthy load times (commodore cassettes -_- ), I can only imagine how younger generations with phone apps that open instantly and games that boot in moments from a resting console state must have zero patience for load times. Granted we got this experience with cartridge based consoles but ssshh its the kids these days thats what * shakes old mans fist * XD

I think the modern metric is “make sure your game loads faster than it takes to navigate to steam reviews and type an angry message”

Oh wow. Well damn, I guess the tides are changing. Sleep well, HDD prince. We shall meet again, in retro tech videos on youtube, next to your old pal floppy disc. You have years of walking to catch up on <3

I’m currently building a new PC for my grandson.

It came as some surprise to me to find that the latest cases don’t have drive bays.

Not only do they not use HDDs, CD-ROM, DVD, or FDD - there’s nowhere to put them, even if you wanted to.

CD Projekt Red are issuing an update for Cyberpunk 2077. As part of this, they’ve changed their minimum system specs. I know it’s not directly applicable to Starfield, but here’s what they had to say:

"One of the changes is the choice to stop supporting HDDs for the minimum requirements – SSDs offer faster loading times, improved streaming, and better overall performance when compared to HDDs.

It’s important to highlight that it doesn’t mean the game will stop working on the previous minimum requirements. However, following the next update to the base game we will discontinue active support for them and stop testing the game on those setups."

Such a shame, HDDs are closer to a cyberpunk aesthetic than SSD

Isn’t that because the M.2 form factor SSDs are as big as RAM chips? I’m trying to find out whether my motherboard has a slot for that and whether it’s fast.

Does that mean PS4 and XboxOne won’t get the update?

Changes are for PC only, AFAIK. See original article here:

I always seem to log in just as you post these thinking I’m late only to find out the show has just started  I don’t even have a switch but a boy can dream!

Is this a fully 3d pokemon rpg like the gameboy games? ;0;

Googling “Elephant Mario” in image search brings up nothing related to what we just saw. Give it an hour and the search result I did get will be no more and full of actual Elephant Mario (instead of the weird 3d fan art horror show i stumbled on to)

This is not a game but posting it here anyway

You are aware that’s a fake trailer, right?

But wouldn’t you love to see it? (Technically, a “movie concept” trailer) but yeah it will never happen. Though with AI bringing people back and making them young again in movies…you never know.

Not sure. The track record of revived franchises isn’t great. There’s blade runner 2049, which was extremely surprisingly really good, and then… Well, I think that’s it.
Now if Spielberg himself was in the chair, I’d probably be cautiously optimistic, because I’m not sure the man has ever made a bad movie, bit I’d still be highly sceptical…
