Have we always been able to feed these guys? They followed me around and I can scoop their poop but cannot collect anything from them and still cannot adopt them.

Playing Permadeath like it’s normal mode, spent over an hour trying to find that last impossible rare underground creature.
In saner times I would have given up the hunt as soon as I realised it was an underground creature.
Why did I think this was a smart move in Permadeath?
Well I found the last creature… And it was VERY angry to meet me…
After that kerfuffle I was happy to find myself on a planet with cute friends. We had a race down a hill and then after getting to know each other, they carried me back up.

Moved to PC since the water world I was sent to for quest is also a blizzard place that gives me that mask rendering glitch when I swim a certain depth on ps5…
Found this giant hermit crab wearing what seems to be some sort of remnants of a machine, perhaps some debris from the Gek First Spawn, it reminds me of their armor somewhat.
Oddly enough, this creature did not show up in the discovered creatures list when scanned (along with some sea horses).
I was however able to throw creature pellets and feed it, I was even able to interact and adopt (though it was janky, I had to almost swim against the shell for the prompt to display long enough for a long press)
It’s around then I realised this wasn’t no gek first spawn tech it was wearing… This was a Travellers Helmet. A rather large one ;0;

Remember when murder crabs used to rule the universe in early versions of no mans sky?
Well my findings seem to indicate that sociopathic hermit crabs that wear our skin, rule the ocean floors.
They’re real friendly though, you just have to get to know them first <3

My friend was only just relaying his memory of being fourteen, his friend reading the cryptid entry for the Hoop Snake and them laughing uncontrollably at the concept for days.
I sent him this creature when you posted it with the message “hoop snakes are real!”.
