Anniversary Update Speculation(with spoilers)

Yea. There’s a few goodies coming up other than just base building parts. With about 3 months left, any day now something is going to come up about it.

With the PS5’s recent showcase of the ps5 performance(new video came out today), and XB1X starting to showcase their performance and capabilities, I wonder if HG is thinking that far ahead. More particularly, the update would obviously work with both current and the upcoming gaming consoles, but are they going to hold-out on many of the new features for the next console? Will updates roll out equally for both? Will they move their game into cloud gaming? Its hard to tell as we are in the dark here, but if the traditional route is taken, its possible they can somewhat stop rolling out updates(or give less) for current console users to be able to move their game forward after the new console comes out. Im confident that they likely have a ps5 dev kit already and are already on top of it like frosting on a cake.

Speculation for things upcoming:

  • I have been surprised that walking NPCs do not have the ability to shoot back yet.
  • Multitool Update: at least one new special multitool type (perhaps with customization)
  • With shooting NPCs, we have the possibility of boarding missions with freighters and pirate nests.
  • New types of biological horrors as the infestation grows
  • Guild systems (that will likely work with the Nexus)
  • A 5 year anniversary next year with a PS5 update.

(My wish list has been fulfilled at this point, except for Sandworms, which may never happen.)

Well, that is basically what they promised back around christmass. Nice to see they got the same guy on board that wrote Atlas Rises, should keep things at least moderately consistent.

What does the song refer to? World of glass?

(I never understood this song’s lyrics. Once I had love and it was a Ghast? So I switched on the official subtitles and in the last verse the caption writer wrote “and it was a PITA” instead of “I had a heart of glass” :flushed:)

Nice find! This is the stuff I like to see. Now we have good reason to believe that there is at least some story content that will be added to the game. Exciting. I wanted more story too.

Sean murrays recent tweet could be nothing, but its interesting that he used a meme format “tired/wired” and essentially saying that call of duty warzone is the past and suduko is whats more trending. I wasn’t the only one who saw it as a potential reference to how NMS does its proc-gen planet rendering as shown once at GDC and possibly referencing that one of the most popular features wanted is variety instead of just another shooter game. Perhaps hes dropping clues now like he did with living ship update with the whole “wait 3 days” tweet and video of an egg? Who knows.

Edit: also, apparently, some redditors and streamers noticed that Hello Games made a reddit account(u/hello_games) and had made an ad for reddit that many of them saw briefly but then it was taken down immediately.

Looks like new story content confirmed!

Interesting to get a ‘pause’ right after the Atlas bobble head, before moving on to the ship trails, some dust plants, and most of all, the remaining Traveller bobble heads. Does this mean that these unlocks are planned to tie in to the new story content?

Either way, looking forward to whatever Hello Games got up their sleeves.

Interesting! I didn’t think of that. I keep forgetting what is left to unlock. That’s very possible as it is very odd that the community missions stop right before starship trails. Plus, we currently don’t know how to truely equip the trail color in-game, likely because the method has yet to be introduced.

What I was thinking was that they have been aware of the community being vocal about the repetitive community missions on all fronts(here, reddit, youtube, etc.) and intend to give us a new way to play community missions. My other thought is that it has been proven already that Greg Buchanan has written more story than what we initially thought and that was a potential giveaway. He said so himself in a tweet that only “some” of what he has done for NMS has been revealed. So it seems likely that community missions are going to get overhauled with story content too, unless he wrote more lore to be littered around the planets.

Some are guessing, based on no proof other than HG once did an ARG, that we may even get story content in the new community missions leading up to the larger update, but that’s just a wild guess from the community online. That would be nice though. That’s a good way to reveal future content in-game and keep the community entertained.

My other thought is that Sony is having a PS5 revealing event next week and that NMS might be involved in it in some way. Perhaps the next update might have some news regarding the future of NMS on the next console so Sony might be forcing them keep quiet untill next week. But that is just a guess based on my very little experience in how marketing works.

With the new information, I’d say it’s very likely that this is exactly what’s going to happen. It has been hinted at from the start that community missions will be tied to some form of narrative, and now it has been confirmed and seems only a couple weeks away. We’re heading towards the anniversary, a traditional date for NMS to release an update, plus Sean has responded in a kind of confirmatory manner to a tweet that kind of speculated that there’s going to be a new update.

If the narrative and the upcomming update aren’t related in some manner, I’ll eat a broom and also the janitor, as we say in Switzerland.

Hmmm, I hope so. It would be a missed opportunity if they didn’t do it.

If they do, that may mean that we might get another smaller update to add the narrative into the game(unless its already written in the game’s code this whole time waiting dormant for a trigger).

That doesn’t sound far fetched, considering that we have been getting small updates every 1-2 months. If we got one in june, then we could be getting the major one 1-2 months later again and that would line-up with an August release date.

Somebody on 4chan claims to have a leak. Apply lots of salt taking into account what platform it’s coming from:

This all started with concept art posted on reddit back in April, which was inspired by another fan made concept art back in September on Reddit. Similar concept art has been made several times by now.

The one made in April (Generations), considering it’s timing, has somehow turned into being interpreted as ‘leak’, despite the fact the creator having been clear about it just being an inspired artwork. YouTubers have been creating videos about it or ‘Generations’ in general to attract viewers and either not being clear about this NOT being a leak, or just being ignorant and presenting it as a leak.

Now the rumour mill has started to do it’s thing, and we see the same disinformation show up everywhere for whatever purpose. Here is the link on 4chan: https://boards.4channel.org/v//thread/510192886/no-mans-sky-leak-ps5-release-major-update
This was followed by another supposed leak on 4chan the day after:

There are some interesting and welcome changes mentioned. I’d rather speculate than pretend to know though

Agreed. While the features do seem very possible and many of them even seem likely, there is no proof or good reason to put our trust in it. Atleast not yet. Soon im sure we’ll get more info that we can trust from the source.

Edit: I just read that Sony says that all games coming out from July forward must be compatable with ps5. Not sure if that means NMS too as it technically came out years ago. But if it does apply to even game updates, that means NMS is basically confirmed for PS5 by force.
