Win10 Issues and News

DO NOT use Microsoft’s Health Check App. It is so very broken. It is giving people false information. It says my processor is not supported and yet it is on the list of supported processors…and please DO NOT buy the TPM modules that are already being scalped online.
TPM has been built into motherboards since about 2006. It may need to be enabled thru the BIOS unless you have a newer motherboard which should have it enabled by default.
Steps to enable TPM
Restart
Hold down the F2 (or FN F2) during boot up to get to BIOS
Navigate to the Security tab (use arrow keys)
Find a listing for either TPM, Intel Platform Trust Technology (IPTT) or AMD CPU fTPM
Toggle it to “Enabled”
Hit F10 to Save and Exit BIOS
If your system shows TPM 1.2 then check for new security drivers from the manufacturer
If you do not have these settings in the Bios then you have a really old PC and you need an upgrade :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

u can type tpm.msc into run, it will tell u if active and what version.

Had my hopes up but still not there.

2012/13 ASUS P8Z77-V_LK motherboard. No TPM or IPTT.

Did you look under Advanced? The bread crumbs that lead you to the correct destination differ from one motherboard to another

nah that board too old. tpm 2.0 came out 2019 i think. So nothing 4+ years older is likely to be upgraded from 1.2 to 2.0.

I believe you can check for drivers from the board manufacturer if you have tpm. But of course, if you have no tpm at all then yes, gotta upgrade.
I understand why microsoft is going this route. So much hacking and ransomware…but still, it is sad we have to come to this.

So … Free upgrade as long as you fork out over $1,000 for a new computer. Sigh.

I would like to replace my PC, but shy away due to the cost. (Note to self: But then you could get that upgraded video card you can’t justify now. Hmmm. Rethinking this… )

The consolation is that Win 10 support will continue until 2025 which gives some time to stuff the piggy bank

OTOH, I’ve read reports that Win11 greatly reduces stutter in No Man’s Sky, for some reason.

If I were Catholic, of need to go to confession about hardware upgrade lust.

yes, I was hoping the stutter was reduced. I believe it has to do with changes in the way the game loads…I am sure someone else would know better than I do. But, they will use the same loading for PC that is used for XBox which allows for a smoother experience. (I forget what the heck it is called :weary: I think covid ate too much of my brain matter and it has not all returned.)

My motherboard does have TPM (1.2), but I do not have the module. No point getting a TPM module either for my ASRock Z97 Extreme6, as 1.2 hardware version is outdated anyway. Some say there is a bios fix for v2.0, which I honestly doubt, as it is a hardware spec. Even then, no point going through the trouble getting it, as my CPU is 4th gen, with requirement being TPM 2.0 with 8th gen socket/CPU. I am all good with Win 10 on this desktop, which is getting old anyway.

I am fine with additional security, but my main issue is the large scale scalping for various hardware parts. I’d love to build a new desktop, but it is just not worth the insane price to get anywhere close to spec and price it used to be back in the days. I’ll just patiently wait until the storms have settled.

Still waiting the PS5/ XBox S storm to settle…no sign of abatement :weary: If they can ever get the cargo ships unloaded that are stranded offshore…
This is really a bad time for everyone when it comes to a new PC. I feel your pain.

In the meantime, Valve and Proton are kicking butt and taking names, lol, as they work to get every game possible to run in Proton. My kids are both signed up and adding their 2-bits to the effort. I have a drive dedicated to Linux and I may be making a bigger shift in that direction in the near future.
The last thing I am open to at this point, is Microsoft dictating to me what hardware I can and cannot use… :imp:

I was fortunate I was able to get my Xbox in December…also managed to score a PS5 Disc Version. Couldn’t budget both…kept Xbox sold PS5 to friend.

Managed to get an PS5 Disc and Digital the same damn day a week ago…wanted Digital but got a chance at DISC first…so grabbed it…sure enough Digital came through. So now I have to sell the PS5 Disc Version without getting lynched lol I know problems right lol

So you have a PS5 disc version for sale? Did you buy it for the retail price?

yup bought from store it was just funny timing how it worked out. I had only been home a couple min from getting the DISC version when I got the other. Apparently the store had it and a few more for over a week, just no one had noticed lol. People forget the smaller stores and focus on the Big chains.

With TPM, they’ll be controlling what software you’re allowed to use, too. “Any software you like - as long as it’s purchased through the Microsoft Store”.

This is really reaching a new level of idiocy…

At least a plus is that the new Microsoft Store will include Android apps. And devs with a way to update/upgrade not at the store get to keep 100% of the charges.

Also, I suspect that the “at the store” caveat applies to UWP apps, not things like MS Office. Time will tell.

Even messaging about Win11 from different MS departments are conflicting right now.

To clarify, Amazon App Store

Two years ago I decided to build a new computer. I discussed it here - we kicked around designs, specifications, and prices. Then, within weeks, I was diagnosed with serious health problems. The computer project was put on hold.

Well, two years have gone by, and I’m still alive. The health problems haven’t gone away, but I’ve better come to terms with them - I don’t feel quite so sorry for myself. So for a while now, I’ve been back in the market for a new computer.

For more than a year, it’s been impossible to get a decent graphics card. None of my usual (trusted) suppliers will even quote me a price, let alone give any idea of delivery dates. I can’'t design the system until I know which graphics card I’m putting in it.

Now Microsoft have dropped a bomb on the whole industry. Prices have gone crazy, and motherboards and processors have gone the same way as graphics cards.

It looks like I will have to wait some more, for this whole mess to calm down. Irritating, considering my available time may be a bit shorter than most people’s.
