Wiki Post - possibly useful?

@ThatBomberBoi @gumsk @YourBasicMaths and possibly others interested:

The Discourse platform does allow for creating Wiki posts usually at topic creation, but can actually turn single replies within, into a wiki post. We have however thus far never really made use of it, and to be honest, albeit aware of its existence, I am not quite up to speed on the details either anymore. It should however allow to collaborate on a topic, possibly useful for organisation and updating info with multiple users.

Please feel free to read up on it on Discourse itself. Below, quite an old topic, but still in use and active I believe. There is more discussion about it to be found I am sure.

I figured to bring it up again to discuss options in regards to our attempt to keep Project Skyscraper organised on here.

Update

We have started making use of Wiki Posts on top posts so far. For already created topics where editing has expired, one of us leaders can make the change instead. So far it appears to work out, but in case of any issues, questions, or discussion on this, please do so in a reply below.

For those topics that have been made a collaborative Wiki Post, we suggest to use the :memo: :memo: emoji prefix in the topic title (edit if need be). This helps visibility of such topics.

To turn a topic (top post) into a Wiki Post, use the ... > :wrench: > Make Wiki from the options below the top post, after creation.

Hey @DevilinPixy (test line on deletion and edit/restoration capability)

Oh, this could be really good! (BenR was here)

Not sure if this is a welcome suggestion, but if the team has access to plugins, would it be out of line to suggest the policy plugin and applying it to the main thread, so reading of the FAQ/Wiki/Guide is required before posting?
This may help reduce noise and repetition…

EDIT: Forgot to mention, a Wiki sounds like a good way to enable easier maintenance by multiple contributors.

Any changes to the backend of the Discourse platform, or the site in general, should be aimed at staff (@oldgods) or possibly through the No Man’s Sky options to contact :link: the owners, Hello Games. We leaders can not make any such changes (or judgement calls for that matter), nor do we have much of a say in these matters, other than suggesting the same by our own means of contact. Therefor we’d rather leave this to the user to do so themselves if they insist. Do be aware they likely (may) have other priorities.

Sounds like a good idea. I wish such a thing was required. I will add to what @DevilinPixy states, HG has said they are “extremely busy” right now so, not sure they will have time but you could always try.

I can say there’s a public API for ETARC - it’s how I got the watcher bot to drop notifications in here automatically - don’t know is there’s any plug ins already built tho

This would be IDEAL since starting a dedicated puzzle thread requires the OP to commit to updating the first post with latest info (at least in a perfect world). Allowing collaborators would ease this commitment and make starting a dedicated thread a little less intimidating I think.

Reading up on this right now, this seems like the perfect way to write out the organisation threads! The only thing I’m not sure about is editing access. The article says that by default, anyone can edit wiki posts unless moderators restrict this ability. Would that be adjustable by the leaders here or require HG input?

I’d say we give this ‘Wiki Topic’ a try! See how far we get with the tools we have available. I will turn this topic into a test bed just to see how it all works out.

That said, if it does not work out or if we require staff to get involved, we’ll have to find other ways/alternatives. Hello Games has been kind enough to allow this platform to exist for us, but they have other priorities.

Top post made wiki topic now. I’ll update on whatever I notice on my end, please do the same on yours, thank you.

Now shows ‘wiki edit’ and colouring of the time in green (last change)

The usual pencil below an post/reply has now moved to be the ‘main action’, instead of being present within the icons to the left.

I will add a horizontal rule <hr> and suggest anyone willing to help test this feature, to try add content, or make changes, below that line. I’ll include a dummy placeholder text too.

Let’s see how this goes.

Oh and please let me know if the ability to enable Wiki Topic for your own created topic/reply, is actually showing. It can be disabled again after as well, the same way.

If so, and once you feel comfortable using it on your existing/new topic(s) elsewhere, be my guest to roll with it. Meantime I suggest we keep discussion about this feature here, as a learning process for us all.

Thank you for this! Looks awesome.

I added a couple things to the OP, then deleted a couple things to see how that gets handled. Curious what you see on your end.

Also, I think if a post is pinned, it can no longer be edited? I noticed that the edit button is no longer showing since this thread was pinned. Unless I’m just that tired and missing it somehow.

I’ll mention that over there too.

Hmmm…I was concerned about that. It should still be there. Under the 3 dots…

For this topic with wiki testing, so far all looks fine on my end.

I see a quick overview of amount of edits, and a green time I still believe to be ‘last edited since’?
Edit overview

I also see a full history (paging) and some additional view options

And here is the current content from our edits so far

Not quite Fandom (GamePedia) level editing though, but I consider it a plus to be somewhat simple to work with.

With the Wiki Posts now having been in use for a bit, how is this working out so far? Any suggestions or specifics you feel needs to be said or done to keep this going as intended? How does it work out for all of you, what has the experience been like thus far? How can we possibly inspire other users to join in, lowering any possible barriers they may come across to have a try at it. I’d love to get some feedback and see how we can truly make the best of this.

Appreciate all of your time and effort :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:

It’s been useful as it’s enabled me and another user to update it. No downsides that I can think of, so all positive.

It’s not a heavily used topic though, so might not be a great case study.

Thanks.

Maybe not a great case study, but the feedback is appreciated and positive at that.

Oh and out of likes, but my attempt may have broke it …

So far, so good! I don’t have any adjustments to add.

Edits that I’ve seen have made sense, and it’s a nice collaborative tool.

Also, I just saw your post from --kzzt-- 16 --kzzt- ago.
