Value: A decision to wait, a regret for waiting.

This was 2016, I was still quite young and new to video games in general. During Christmas one of my friends had been gifted a new game that was still being developed over time: No Man’s Sky. At that time, they said they’d rather put money into Star Citizen after playing. As a result, I didn’t get the game or even think about it until much later. Me and him both have one regret, not sticking through and continuing it. He sunk money into Star Citizen’s fundraising and regrets that. I regret never trying No Man’s Sky myself, I regret waiting for an opportune moment to play it once it was further along and better than what that friend had said.

Value: The real hard work begins.

I grew tired of drawing buildings, floorplans and electronic schematics. I began to dream of fantastic lands littered with ancient ruins, trees in all colours of the rainbow, rocks made from crystal clear ice that shimmered in hues of blue and magenta – but in my mind they were reduced to their most basic silhouette – an expression of their truest shapes. Beginning to envision them built from large, expressive facets, I silently planned away. Sketching, carving out time from my work schedule and other projects, and as February drew closer and a week began its progress into another, the tenacity finally met me head on and I sat down with that plan – beginning the hard work of turning it into visual math on my screen – triangle by triangle until a true and broad collection of objects began to form, transporting myself and others to the fantastic lands they too imagined in their minds eye. There are dreamers all around us, thinking about lands we’d never travel to if not for these thoughts. Our shared dream reminds me of this moment often.

My first news of No Man’s Sky was thanks to a short feature from one of my favorite science fiction authors, relaying how he played the game for hours with the hilarious sole purpose of provoking in-game death so he could see which of his quotations the developers had included as a “Game Over” notification. From this short piece, the concept of No Man’s Sky leapt out at me; “video games” typically don’t catch my interest, but this was different. NMS called to me on a new frequency. It was some time (and a computer acquisition) later before I could begin my own journey, but I knew then that my first steps were inevitable, eventual, and would constitute a new beginning, a dream I could share with others, among the stars …
