First of all, Hello Games did a bang up job with Worlds Part 2. If you played on launch day, you might remember that mineral deposits were huge bulb like formations that were above ground. It looks like, in a way, they brought it back as part of terrain generation. I now only exclusively explore purple systems. Some landscapes truly do look āalienā. I regret not taking pictures sometimes. In all honesty, if Hello Games wanted to do a whole universe reset, I wouldnāt mind. I do have 2 fairly complex bases, but if a universe reset means terrain like this anywhere, then Iād be fine with it. But I would not be surprised if Hello Games does a universe reset and finds a way for us to keep our bases by some type of algorithmic āterrain fitting or matchingā, it would not surprise me at this point. No filter was used with these pictures.
Theyāre very atmospheric pictures - science, certainly, but not as fictional as you might think.
For me, they bring back quite disturbing memories.
On the North-East coast of England thereās a place called Fylingdales Moor. Itās as bleak and uninhabited a place as youāll find in this country. From the 1960s to the 1990s it was home to a nuclear attack early warning RADAR station, RAF Fylingdales. The huge spheres were visible on the horizon from 30 or 40 miles away, a constant reminder that fiery death could arrive within minutes. I used to find the place really worrying.
Iām sure they could find some galaxies with few or no bases that they could reset without touching the othersā¦
Thatās essentially what they did with the purple systems - they introduced whole new geographies and planet types, without affecting the existing ones.
Yes, but if one wanted them not segregated, but be the default mode of terrain generation, I think they could do that in just a specific galaxy or two or three.
Iām fairly certain that HG tweaked regular yellow, green, blue & red systems too.
There was a mention of it in the initial Worlds 2 Patch Notes but it hasnāt come up much here.
Iāve encountered destinctly different planet terrains in undiscovered systems, often with never seen before features, creatures & flora.
After playing NMS for 9 years, you tend to recognise a general ālookā of a planet.
Long term players will know what I mean.
Some planets I had bases on got new plants & minerals but were otherwise unchanged.
However, a couple of my most ancient discovered systems totally changedā¦ as if Legacy era discoveries were overlooked during the update.
Also, following the update, one of my saves was a fair way short of having completed enough things to start the newer features & systems so subsequently I found myself visiting many āregularā systems & experiencing all sorts of variety Iād never encounteted before.
I really hope they leave them seperate otherwise, we return to seeing too much of the same thing again
Iām normally opposed to segregation but in this instance I like that a vastly superior terrain gen is hiding at the āendā of the game for new players.
There was some general improvements to terrain gen in yellow/red/green/blue systems as @Mad-Hatter pointed out.
The terrain layout has been unchanged but how the terrain points converge and the terrain detail it creates has been vastly reworked. Slopes look āslopierā, inclines look āinclinierā and the terrain gen also seems to take a different approach when it comes to smoothing out those weird areas that live diagonal āpixelsā of terrain on edges.
Another big player in how well all of this looks is the new lighting system. Itās doing so much heavy lifting with adding more depth and seamlessness to the terrain and how everything sits in the scene together.
Some lovely new biome textures across all systems too. I think my favourite is the new gravely radioactive planet texture, reminds me of exploring stone quarrys etc as a kid Sliding down huge piles of stone and getting my shoes and pants covered in a chalky grey.
Here's the detailed patch notes on the changes effecting ALL star systems for those who may have missed it ;)
Planetary variety and diversity has been increased all across the universe.
Dense jungle worlds can now be found all across the universe.
New desolate desert worlds can now be found all across the universe.
Rare and strange ruined relic worlds can now be found all across the universe.
These new worlds have been added to both existing systems and the new purple-class star systems, but in such a way as to minimise change to existing worlds.
The diversity and variety of hazardous flora on all worlds has been increased.
On top of this, significant additional planetary diversity can be found in purple-class star systems.
A large number of new procedurally generated varieties of scorched, frozen, toxic and barren worlds have been introduced, as well as additional variety for worlds featuring floating islands.
A new resource, polished stone, has been added to relic planets.
Players who search the ruins of relic planets may uncover plans to construct replica ruins of their own.
Planetary weather hazards such as lightning and tornadoes have been reworked for additional visual impact.
Additional localised planetary hazards have been where appropriate, providing both visual diversity and additional exploration challenge.
Hazards included localised clouds of toxic spores; small-scale radioactive fallout; electromagnetic anomalies; volcanic eruptions; geothermal geysers; and localised gravity inversion zones.
@Licoricemint Iāve come across a few planets now with the weird terrain globules and pillars that remind me of raw ore nodes before they went away. (was it Next that got rid of them?)
Hereās one Iāve been meaning to post for a while
It feels very nostalgic when I see them, Iāve even seen some ore almost make a pillar up to some floating terrain in a purple system too. Itās trying to be what it once was
I think these are certainly unique to purple systems as I have NOT encountered anything like those youāve sharedā¦ only the more detailed terrain sculpting & the surface textures.
Oh sorry I did not mean to imply they were part of the changes to all systems, I was just circling back around to the discussion of purple strangeness
My respose was more to reassure @sheralmyst that the Purple systems are still very unique & that the tweaks havenāt risked the āsamenessā that weād begun to feel in other systems.
I have edited my post as it read incorrectly my meaning
I will forever morn Heridium deposit and spaghetti planets. but the trades where worth it. I wish hello games would of just replaced undiscovered planets with every major change. I understand it probably wouldnāt of work because of gameplay changes and likely feasibility. It would be cool to go to a day one planet. Maybe they could of added a warning before entering the systems and you would have to have old tech that is compatible with that system iteration.
Iāve actually considered whether or not it would be that hard to just ālegacyā any planet with a base and reset everything else.
Thereās several edge cases that would come up here that could make things rather complicated. For one, youād have to know when a base was created, otherwise the planet would just revert to its old self as soon as you build a base on it. That in itself wouldnāt seem too bad, but now you have other issues like imperfect knowledge. Effectively youād have to guarantee that you know whether thereās a base on a planet before you even start generating the system, which will introduce additional latency. And now weāre talking about the game effectively requiring a connection to determine what a planet should look likeā¦
I love making this point when two friends are arguing between eve/star citizen having the better/more immersive living universe experience.
I can play my universe offline, perfect desert island pick
Just let me have an internet connection for the first thirty mins to download the updates
I have finally made an underwater base on a water world in a purple system. The depth of the base is roughly 1300 units and Iāve named it the āMarianna Trench Outpostā. The Marianna Trench is the deepest part of the ocean here on earth. Aside from all the bioluminescent plant life and animal life and lighting from my base, it is pitch black everywhere you look. Since life began in the oceans, it can feel like youāve traveled back in time to the planetās past. There are very fast krill and seahorses around my base. Iāve tried to tame the seahorses but they are too fast to catch up to. There are of course gigantic squid which you canāt tame. There are also these huge hermit crabs which I did tame. I wasnāt sure at first if you can take them onto dry land but you can. I was surprised how huge they were since I like to play in first-person. But the images are in third person. This pet is unmodified in anyway, all I did was feed it and adapt it. The image below is the same image, Iāve just circled my avatar in white so that you get a sense of scale.
Did the patch fix the crabs? They were not showing at first and I have forgotten to check to see if mine is showing now
I wasnāt aware of any issues or glitches with regards to crabs. So far I have had no problems, so if there was an issue in the past I assume it has been patched.
Hard to guage the depth between them but all I wanna do is ramp an exocraft off the crashed Freighter and try land on top of the Archives sphere
Was digging my way out of a deep cave system and was pleasantly surprised by tree roots blending naturally with my traveller made hole.
Obsession with water physics and reflections has yet to fade or lose itās appeal
