Speaking of murder in NMS…I have hit three not-quite-abandoned ships in a row. I can’t think of anything in game that currently annoys me more, and I really think that if some clown Vy’keen runs their ship out of fuel and crashes it then hangs around moping until I come along to fix it for them I should be given the option to just shoot them and take their ship.

That would be fine. Do I want the ship bad enough to do the work to repair my standing with them? Questions like that are a significant part of interesting game play.
Suddenly I wonder if I could just shoot them and take the ship. I realize in a flash of light that I never actually tried it…
This may have just doomed some downed pilot…

I did. You can’t. Your weapons have no effect. It’s uber frustrating.
If you point your gun at them, it won’t fire. The best you can do is aim in front of them, and fire plasma balls so they bounce off the ground and explode in their face. They don’t suffer any damage. They don’t even acknowledge that you’re doing it.

Zooming in on the meteor shows the smoky trail nicely. Nice enhancement.
