Things just got serious here.

Here in South Africa with only 62 positive tested cases known, there is also the start of a lockdown. Schools closing and workplaces encouraged to support work from home. Ports of entry closure. Mass gatherings eg sports events shutdown. But no complete social location closure like in Europe.

From our government website:
https://www.gov.za/NovelCoronavirus

Meanwhile our tourism board didn’t get the memo, advert on TV tonight showing and encouraging social gatherings
ending in this tagline :man_facepalming:

Yes. Here, people are rushing airports to get back into the US. A cruise ship docked 2 days ago and NO ONE was screened.
I drove through an empty downtown yesterday and drove thru (did not go into) a Wendy’s and the manager was saying how stupid this was. An over reaction she said.
I stopped to fill my gas tank and wiped down the handle and buttons on the pump with a Lysol wipe. A younger guy standing about 15 feet away, was smirking and started coughing really loudly and looked at me, laughing. Apparently, he still thinks this is a joke.
I have a friend with friends in Washington state. They are living the reality of what is coming for the rest of us. They have been home for over 2 weeks now. Fast food chains have set up home delivery so no one has to leave home. Their workers are carefully screened and checked everyday. The stores and restaurants are sanitized daily. All workers wear masks and gloves. They said, It’s ok. You settle into a routine at home. Schoolwork, work from home. Fix it jobs that need fixing. Just breathe. Be with your family and be safe.
This same friend of mine teaches English to Chinese children via Skype. One of her students was eating and she asked him what it was. He wrote KFC on the screen, lol. It was home-delivered.

The CDC is asking for gatherings of no more than 10 people for the next 8 weeks. Americans are either selfish and pig-headed or else they are terrified. Hopefully, some of us can be sensible. I have heard reports of gun stores being emptied
gotta protect their toilet paper,

Some news items are a bit odd:
“Reuters - German vaccine developer CureVac has not received a takeover offer from the United States, was not asked to reserve production slots nor were its scientists lured to move to the U.S.”

 Someone does protest too much?

There’s also nice news: Vietnamese grocery store and restaurant owners in Czechia offer free drinks to members of the emergency services.

The background is that some Czechs have been harrassing the Vietnamese minority for years (“ching-chang-chung”, “you eat cats and dogs” etc.) – and the Vietnamese “retaliate” by being stoic and friendly.

Latest “wake up call” headline for Americans:
“US coronavirus cases surpass $5,000, up fivefold from a week ago.”

Yet younger not-at-risk people still congregate at bars and gatherings, which will spread the disease faster than it need be. Grrr. Sigh.

What they don’t think about is that the risk for them is NOT Zero. All ages can catch it. All ages can die from it. Anyone can have an underlying health problem and not realize it.

It’s being announced on this morning’s news that the UK government is pushing through emergency legislation later this week. The laws will be in effect for two years.

Amongst other pretty sweeping powers, the legislation will give police the power to forcibly detain and isolate (basically, imprison) anybody they believe to be a risk, and who does / will not self-isolate.

I understand where this is coming from, but the possibilities for abuse are very scary. Because, you know, our police are all fine, upstanding, honest citizens, right? Not a bad apple amongst them.

Kansas schools closed for the rest of the current school year, but luckily they will still pay me for my regular hours. I guess they don’t want 100% of their staff leaving to get other jobs, so they are paying us to stick around.

However, anti-inflammatories do work by suppressing the immune system. China began sounding a possible link back in January. So, if you do not already take them, better to err on the side of caution and stay away from them. If you already take them, your immune response is already repressed.
