Background: Been 3D printing/modelling as a hobby for around a decade now, but the last year ive been doing it as a side gig printing and selling 3D models and files, and now dedicating more time to it after being laid off.
One of the ways to get really good cosplay helmet recreations is to get the 3D files of said helmet off the internet. Usually you’ll find it online from a variety of sites that range from free to a few dollars. If it isn’t, and its from a video game, there are people online that can extract character models for you from games. From there, you can use your 3D modelling software of choice to break the model down to printable sized pieces.
However, what people tend to forget about 3D printing is that in order to get the most out of one it requires some knowledge of 3D modelling too. Many of the things we need/want to make arent on the internet yet so they have to be custom made. And even if it is on the internet for download, in many cases it requires chopping up the model into smaller, printable pieces. And if your trying to make something look like it wasn’t 3D printed, it requires a little sanding/painting skills(which is easy but messy and time consuming)
But if that’s not an option, you can also commission someone from a place like Fiverr(or me, cough cough, but I generally do simple/small stuff) to whip you up a 3D model of the helmet your looking for, although its generally not cheap depending on the complexity of the model.

In the 1970s and early 1980s I was a firefighter. One January night we were called to a city centre hotel around 11.00 p.m. It was very cold - there must have been three inches of ice on the ground.
It turned out the hotel was hosting a science fiction convention, and this was the night of the party, which all the guests attended in their chosen costumes. Somebody’s antics had set off the fire alarm, and the hotel had evacuated all guests into the forecourt car park. By the time we arrived, there was a milling mass of aliens, robots, intergalactic bounty hunters, and sundry unidentifiable species, freezing to death in minus 15 degree temperatures.
I remember one (very attractive) young woman, who was completely naked, apart from about four metres of strategically placed red ribbon (if you’ve seen The Fifth Element, you get the idea). Since there was no fire, I lent her my jacket.
That was my introduction to Cosplay - I thought they were all quite mad.

A costume requiring four metres of cleverly placed ribbon from a 70s or 80s sci fi movie/show?
Well she could have been only one person
I found your (very attractive) young woman
Looks to be about January too, she picked a good night for the reanactment
@Jupiter.blues I was messing around with photogrammetry during the lockdown when I got an RTX card, there was a 30 day trial of some software that utilised the GPUs cores specifically.
I made models of these burnt out cars in a nearby field where teenagers have been drinking for nigh on two generations. I thought it would be funny to print out miniature versions of them, paint them rusted and then place them near or next to them.
I’d never be there to see it but I like the idea of people being confused for a moment. Especially drunk people.
I never got around to cleaning up the models for printing but I had fun doing it as a learning process.

I suppose it could be - back in the seventies, girls weren’t so obsessed with hair removal.

The plushes are now up on the Youtooz site, with pre-orders open on the Anniversary, for a December shipping period:

That traveller went one step further than just ripping telamons speaker box out, it straight up tore it’s eyeball off too ;0;
Neither of these are the Vy’Keen or Artemis I would immediately throw money at but I’m going to try get the Gek if I can because a plushie with a cape is an automatic win.

It’s the paid dlc update everyone said they’d happily welcome after getting so many free ones.
So I expect everyone to buy one
We need some plushies for our cockpit in-game. And bobble heads for reality, next.

I got this one from another, smaller, franchise already

So yes there are 3D printing files that can be shared…
But I really want to know if anyone has NMS crochet patterns for DIY plushies

Oooh, that’s a fun idea. Start by finding a picture of your favourite NPCs from the front, back, and side.
I once made crochet astronauts (I posted them in an art thread here). Their skeleton was a wire (so they become posable) and I put coins in their feet (so they can stand).
A Korvax head is probably the easiest, the Vy’Keen and Gek head-shapes are an interesting challenge.
And Anomalies will be hardest?
… How does one write crochet instructions so other people find meaning in them…? I usually undo and redo parts until I like them, I don’t count anything.

There are 2 ways. One is written using stitch names. (Though British and American have stitches with different names)
The other way is popular in Japan and is more visual.
If you just crochet by feel, and do not know the names of stitches, then that makes it a lot more difficult

Woah, that’s a cool squid ship!
And: Yeeeah I won’t be any help for professional crocheters…. I don’t even know names for patterns in my native language, let alone US/GB differences. And, aren’t amigurumi Japanese? We should be using Japanese terminology, like in Karate.

This makes it seem much more complicated than it is. I have a large book with pics. I work better by visualization. Once you understand the reason for the terminology, it is easier to remember.

The NMS website just got updated with a new merch page! It currently only links to the Youtooz plushies, but HG might be planning more!

for me, that is like looking at an alien schematic for a machine to turn trash into energy. I have to have the written instructions.
OMG. I may have to make this.

We have a few surprises planned, including collaborating with youtooz to bring you something a bit special.
Anniversary update likely? I feel like this post is worded more as “it’ll come eventually” though, so it might be a while till we see the emoji imo.
