Why do they even bother acting aloof anymore? All the milk in washington gets spilled almost immediately, the trump administration can’t keep anything under wraps, which kind of makes them the most transparent the US government has ever been. But not in the way one would hope.
Project 2025? Never heard of it.
*Proceeds to do it all anyway… *
Did we know about israels plans to attack iran? Not at all… Give us two weeks to mull it over…
Today they admit they do not know where the enriched uranium is…yes, Iran was listening when Trump blabbered so they moved as much as possible. Who knows what else was moved.
Now they have stuff in a secret location.
Now they are angry and running out of options…
And a “worldwide caution” alert has been given to all Americans everywhere…
The joke in the military used to be that the US military salute is palm down, not exposing your secrets while the British salute is palm forward, exposing everything…well, that used to be the joke
I suspect Trump and his cronies are not too concerned about it… Iran will not take direct offensive action against the US, and a successful terrorist attack would play right into their hands…
I was reminded of this film recently, I used to watch it a lot as a kid, maybe even more then the original, which I also watched an awful lot. Rick Moranis was always a welcomed sight in our household.
I cannot see it now as anything else other than incredible symbology for Trumps presidential approach.
Not a lot of GIFs online of this giant toddler causing mayhem so I’m thinking this movie might be almost forgotten by most, or certainly not in the lexicon of younger generations. I say we remedy that.
More giant toddler rampge GIFs, when do we want em? NOW!
Not making light of a terrible situation just need some self induced belly laughs to cope with the reality
There’s an awful lot of nonsense and mythology surrounding military salutes. You may read that it’s an unbroken tradition passed down from the Romans, or that it comes from medieval knights raising their helmet visor to identify themselves, or that it shows the empty right hand, demonstrating that one is not holding a weapon. All of these explanations are apocryphal at best, and backed up by very little evidence.
The truth is, there’s little or no evidence of any kind of military salute before the 17th century. The practice appears to be a very modern invention. General consensus amongst historians seems to be that the practice grew out of the common courtesy of raising one’s hat to a superior.
Whilst the British Army and Air Force use the palm forward salute, the British Navy have always used the palm downwards variation. Again, there seems to be general consensus that this was because sailor’s hands were covered with tar from rigging, and it was considered disrespectful to show dirty hands to an officer.
Quite what this says about the American army, I couldn’t begin to guess.
Like a soap opera
Trump declares ceasefire
Israel claims Iran broke it
Iran claims Israel broke it
Trump declares they both broke it
Trump tells Israel not to drop those bombs
For those who don’t know, Trump wants really, really badly to get the Nobel Peace Prize. He has wanted it for a really long time
Trump is reportedly, “furious” at them both
I mean, they gave it to Obama for some reason well beyond any legitimacy. Giving it to Trump would be kind of honest by this point. “Look, we’re really not giving any shits anymore, anyone can have it!”
When I was at university, in the arts faculty library toilets, there was a toilet paper dispenser. Above it, someone had written “Sociology Degrees - Please Take One”*.
Looks like Peace Prizes are going the same way.
It didn’t go without challenge. In the sciences faculty library someone wrote “Three years ago I couldn’t spell “engineer” - now I are one”.
Interesting. I know that one in german. It’s (or used to be) fairly widespread in Switzerland, but so far I wasn’t even aware it was used in english as well.
Probably not as well known in English in America due to it sounding like a slur against African Americans. This type of grammer was quite common even when I was younger,
It’s not heard too much these days though it is definitely still around.
Not many over here seem to be able to see the joke for the possible discrimination
In English, dialect seems to be much more a question of status and not of geography, is that true?
I’m interested in languages but have stopped asking my (harder to parse) English colleagues about their dialects, because some get annoyed/defensive, that’s not what I wanted…
In Switzerland, I always enjoyed watching TV discussions where some guy steps up to the mic and responds e.g. in French with a German accent, and nobody would doubt that he’s an elected politician.
Or, German chancellors speak standard German, but they don’t have to hide their dialect, you can hear that they grew up in this or that real village, and did not “emerge as adults from a Greek goddess” or a specific university.
Actually, it is all about both.
Southern, Cajun, mid western, New England and West Coast.
Each area has a bit of its own dialect.
However, what you sound like when you open your mouth and speak can illicit strong emotions from some individuals.
For instance, having a strong southern accent is usually associated with being uneducated.
My uncle travelled a lot teaching janitorial classes. He taught which chemicals and cleaning processes were best for all kinds of situations and fabrics and for clean up after things like a fire. These were attended by adults, not kids. So it was quite amusing when the ratings given about the instructor would contain comments like, “I couldn’t understand a word he was saying. Why did you hire a foreigner?”
On one trip to Colorado, a man in the crowd said something about beating in his thick, ignorant, hillbilly skull. My uncle brushed it off but a friend of his who lived in the area told him to take it seriously and suggested they leave immediately.
However, these days, there are way bigger things dividing these “United States”
My uncle is from the state of Georgia. Most of his classes were across the north. Places like Iowa and Illinois.
So maybe some of your colleagues have experienced this kind of prejudice…or it could be they feel their colleagues are the ones with the ridiculous accent…
It is a shame.
A funny story.
A friend of mine teaches English to Chinese children as a private tutor. When applying for the job, the parents saw she lives in Arkansas and they were very concerned. She explained that she is from Michigan and does not have a southern accent.
The parents were relieved and she was hired.
Dialect and accent go hand in hand here. Each area also has its own way of expressing certain things.
The lines are more blurred these days. The population has shifted a lot especially in the last 5 years.
That’s a huge question, and probably worthy of a thread all of its own. People in positions of power, wealth, and influence, are educated to speak a particular form of English. It used to be known as “Standard English”, but is nowadays more often referred to as “Received Pronunciation” (RP).
Because RP is the language of choice of the upper levels of society, it has been adopted by those who desire to advance their own, or their children’s social status. Those who speak regional dialects were traditionally been seen as ignorant and uneducated.
There has been some push-back against this since the 1950s, and there are now a fair number of prominent people who speak with regional accents, but the prejudice remains. There is a great deal of pressure, particularly on young people applying for jobs, or starting out in their chosen profession, to fit in, and be like their peers. Speaking with a regional accent or dialect may or may not be a handicap - but a lot of people choose not to take the chance. If you want to be accepted in a position requiring education or professional skills, it’s safer to learn RP.
Ah so this is why he keeps causing chaos, then ends the chaos and claims he brought peace.
It all makes sense now. I mean it is still bat shit crazy but it’s nice to understand where his logic lies.
I guess the requirements are outdated and didn’t include anything about increase in drone strikes, and you can just rack up those peace points by reducing soldiers stationed on the ground
I wish I was joking but this also feels in this day and age to maybe have a 1% possibility to be true.
The real truth is probably just wanting to be timely with the zeitgeist of first non white US president, for the reeling back the years buzz reels in a few decades of course. And then they can have a future party to celebrate the anniversary of it all.
I found an AI news propaganda website for Irish bigots that clearly is not made by Irish people, just another head on the A.I Fascist hydra machine
Here’s some actual reporting from the day, no doubt the counter protest that appeared was led astray there by websites like the one above (though the Irish times aren’t the best source either, it’ll do for now)
I also imagine a lot of people didn’t attend Mahurram out of fear of how large or boisterous the counter protest ended up being. Especially in Dublin city centre, any rogue prick looking to cause harm will gladly hijack any cause as they stand for nothing.
Meanwhile the UK is also calling every antigenocidal message from artists, antisemitism and criminal.
Some Irish solidarity there
We’re in for a bumpy road ahead folks
Edit: whenever I make posts in this thread, then go to YouTube, it always serves up an appropriate video on the algorithm. Here’s a video about how AI art has become the go to tool for modern day fascist propaganda.
Wait til millions in the US lose their health insurance while RFKjr forces everyone to use wearables to monitor their health. Not sure how that helps when you can’t afford the wearable or the insurance or the medical care.
