News From The Void

For all the awfulness that Trump has brought, it’s good to take count of how far you’ve come despite it all.

For example

If you did this in the 90’s and ended up down in Arkansas you’d have been blamed for the murder of a local resident or something like that.

Don’t worry they let you out eventually…

That doesn’t happen all that much anymore (blaming the weird kids for murder), you guys are doing good.

(I’ll admit I only know about these guys because Eddie Vedder mentioned em on a Live Pearl Jam DVD I watched in 2001.)

Now they just shoot you first then sort it all out later.
It’s all hills and valleys. As long as we stay on the road, it will be ok

A similar thing happened with Brexit and people who held dual citizenship for European Countries due to their parent’s emigrating to their birth country.

People born in Northern Ireland are born with a sort of quasi dual nationality. They can identify as British, Irish or both, and apply for both ROI and NI passports.

There was a lot of people suddenly applying for R.O.I passports to regain the freedom of movement to other European countries that being an EU member allows.

Even those who would prominently lead an Orange Order Parade, were applying for that Republican passport so they could continue to enjoy easy access to their favourite coast in Spain.

I have cousins born in England who love to flex to their friends about their bonus EU citizenship.

I think @Polyphemus has one too.

Any heritage you can weasel an escape booklet out of?

Ireland was never going to make the list for two reason. Cost of living and the weather. Netherlands and Sweden are pretty awesome but also absent on the list. I’ve noticed that is the pattern. They are all warm climate countries. Send your mountaineers and Seattle…ites? our way.

No, I could, but I never did - however my daughter has one, as do several of her English-born aunts.

It’s pretty academic for me, now - I only really leave the house for hospital appointments. Going back to Ireland seems fairly unlikely.

Some good news. As trump team scrambles to fill positions (insiders say they were in shock. All expected either defeat or a battle over a razor thin margin) they are saying RFK Jr. will “not be getting a job” on the team.
Thank goodness. Let’s all pray it holds. He was already stating he was going to rip apart the entire health agency for child care. No vaccines etc…what a nightmare!

I do wonder how many of team Trump’s other lies will be exposed at the first hurdle. Most of Trump’s promises seem somewhere between bigly difficult to impossible - many of them involving things which he failed to achieve during his first term (like stopping immigration), or which are largely beyond his control (like the war in Ukraine).

All and I do mean All of the stolen election propaganda went immediately silent the second they knew he won…
what his followers do not understand is that he will say whatever is needed to get the vote. What he does later may in no way relate to what came out of his mouth.

The thing that really worries me is that I think they do understand. They just don’t care. They would rather have an affirmation of their own bigoted fantasies than any objective truth. I’m convinced that most of them know it’s not true, but like religious zealots, they’re going to follow it anyway.

I found smthg like this. What do You think about it?

If the figures are accurate, they indicate that in 2020 more people turned out to vote. More people were concerned to make their view heard.

Even the 2020 figure only represents around 62 - 65 % of the electorate (depends how you measure it). Pretty poor show for an active democracy.

There are more than 334 million US citizens so, I see that almost half the citizens do not vote on a regular basis

I heard they gave his position to the brain worm. They realised all the things they liked about RFK Jr was actually coming from the worm. Once he got the worm removed they all realised who they’d much rather hang out with.

It’s great progress for brain worms, really aspiring stuff, but not so much good news for the humans.

Those election turn out results for 2020 are interesting. That was the year everyone was trying new things because lockdown. Some folk were so bored they actually voted that year :stuck_out_tongue:

It probably also had a lot to do with people seeing their relatives die from COVID before their eyes and realising, that guy has got to go.

Then they probably felt disillusioned by all the sleepy Joe propaganda and returned to “voting is a waste of my time” mentality in time for 2024.

It’s funny because, a lot of industrys during lockdown down suddenly got this surge of customers they normally wouldnt have, then stupidly projected the same growth for every year after and invested in things they probably shouldn’t have. It was nice to see capitalist mentality shoot itself in the foot with it’s lustre for year on year growth.

I feel embarrassed for anyone that based future projection off of lockdown trends :joy: kinda makes you realise just how dumb they are, they only know how to follow the rules of the game they’ve made. they’re very good at one particular thing. While also pushing against a new work from home eco system despite that being one lesson from lockdown they should have embraced.

But they own property and rent it and if nobodies coming to the office who will rent my office suites? Better force the ones who prefer the remote work back in .

Looking at the figures for the 2018-2022 election cycle it makes me realise that incentives from the past by artists like “rock the vote” or “vote or die mother fucker (mother fucker vote or die)” don’t actually work and may have the opposite effect in turning people away from the polls.

I couldn’t remember what south park were parodying so I just went with the south park parody.

Remember when we used to make a concerted effort to keep politics out of this forum, so we could just be nice friends enjoying our space game and not burn any bridges or cause any rifts?

I love how reality has literally left us no choice, we can’t just ignore this stuff and wonder… we HAVE to talk about it now.

I have a saying for people like Elon…

He’s the kind of guy who doesn’t wish for a bigger penis, he wishes everyone else had a smaller one than him.

I don’t put much weight into things like that but I absolutely adore riling up someone who does. It’s a quick way to get someone to go away from you too. I learned that from my first girlfriend, if a guy hit on her shed just start talking about their miniscule manhood and how their mother told everyone about it down the hairdresser’s, talk of the town, etc :joy:

She’s still one of the funniest people I know, give them a like and subscribe :stuck_out_tongue:

I’d be surprised if Elons ideals and expectations were’nt laid out long before now in the event he was a main pillar in DJT’s re-election. Although Im no self professed political expert, I’m at least fairly certain that personal insults directed at his anatomy on a game forum will not change the current geopolitical climate in any meaningful way.
My tuppence (2 cents) would be lets stop with the nonsense and hyperpole and see where we are in 6 months.

We can still all be friends Todd.

And my purpose is not to support nor oppose any one but to inform. So not trying to be devisive. It will be what it will be but being informed will help us all navigate the waters

I must confess, I am more guilty than most of political transgression. However, the election is over, and for good or ill, we’ll have to live with the consequences.

Let’s tone it down, at least until the rhetoric of those in power turns into actions.

Remember folks, Politics is a swamp. In the US, of course, it is well known term thanks to your favourite president  and has acquired some new sound.

But in my 3rd world country, for decades, this has been said, warning everyone, be careful, don’t get involved in politics, because it’s one big swamp.
And if you wanna go anyway, learn to swim like reptiles who lives there.

It’s a foggy autumn night here in Crosby. Visibility is less that 100 yards, there are fuzzy golden haloes around the streetlamps, and the sound of traffic in the distance is muffled. Half a mile away is the river approach to Liverpool docks, and I can hear the foghorns from the ships waiting for the incoming tide. It’s very atmospheric out there, but all in all, It’s a good night to be indoors, in the warm.

Sounds like what I have always imagined it to be like over there. Sounds damp but nice.
It has been foggy here as well. It is fun to watch it roll in and settle down among the trees. Fall colors are in full swing. I have had several nice nights to work on my crochet while watching my Miss Marple series and sipping a cup of hot tea.
