📝 Memory Editing - Planning Thread

Hey y’all! As the Jan 5th and Jan 7th threads might indicate, the memory editing process seems to be very poorly understood due to the haphazard nature of today’s submissions. I’ve started tracking our submissions to these in the Memory Tracker Sheet, but its clear that we have very little data, and many people attempting the same / similar ideas without much planning. in light of this, I think itd be best to tell people not to spam entries or articles the next time an unverified page goes live, just so we can narrow down what’s going on and test out the waters and check off any theories we have.

Some useful things to know would be:

  • What the hell are the stars for? Do they increase an entry’s chances to anchor? If so, what’s stopping everyone from spamming 5 star entries? Why have lower star entries at all?
  • Is the system really expecting dated articles? Does it expect links at all?
  • Is data convergence the main factor for anchoring a bloc? Could we, for example, anchor a bloc entirely about porwiggles by having different community members submit coherent, similar entries about porwiggles?
  • What exactly causes the compliance percentage to go down? Is it having non-conforming pieces of data on the page together?

We could definitely come up with a set of test submissions to figure these out if / when we get another unverified set of blocs to run tests on together

A potentially high-value test would probably be something not immediately tied to NMS pre/post release coverage, have no articles, and all be rated the same star rating (1? 3?). If the copypasta is anchored (and since its the only thing being sent in, probably shoots up to 100%), then we can answer a lot of the questions above.

This thread serves as a spot to discuss potential submission plans and coordinate across communities. This top post will be updated with the current “action plan” once it is set for the next unverified bloc, which should be publicized to as many members as possible.
I’d love if other members could give their thoughts on this and help organize a submission, as well as inform participating communities of the plan! This thread will also maintain a set of links to all Memory Block Editing threads as they become active, serving as an FAQ as we figure this thing out, as well as a landing page for all such topics.

Discussion Threads for Memory Bloc Editing Pages

Current Action Plan

  • Create 2-3 different groups of Operators assigned to submitting coherent entries for a single “theme” assigned to their group, as suggested by @Vau1t
  • Come up with 2-3 distinct “topics” to center submissions around which avoid the commonly-spammed information mentioned above.

Based on discussion in the forums and NMScord, I believe the following 3 grouped submissions could work well for this task, although alterations, additions, or thematic changes are encouraged below and will be added if enough people agree on them:

The Cult Of NED

Submissions: Copypastas about the adventures of NED from this post by @YourBasicMaths, as well as “translations” (your own interpretations) of a copypasta in your terms. This can be as silly as you’d like, as is the topic’s nature!

Recommended Stars: 2

The Hive Of GR3G and D4N

Submissions: Short, coherent stories / tales about the adventures of resident Sentinels GR3G and D4N, created by @MounTheRainbow! The sentinels exist in our real world, so stories about sentinels exploring the modern day are encouraged!

Recommended Stars: 3

Dragon’s Den

Submissions: False “memories” about the release of Light No Fire and / or gameplay might work well here. We managed to get the System to acknowledge LNF temporarily before the submissions were overwritten, so we might be able to get em to stick if done systematically!

Recommended Stars: 4

The Spawning Pool

Submissions: David Attenborough-style narratives about Porwiggles. More details to follow, courtesy of @Selfie-Gek

Recommended Stars: 4

How will we be assigned groups? I imagine we want all 3 to be roughly equal in size. Should we create a poll to see if people self-distribute fairly equally? or will someone pick a number for us?

I wonder if preloading our submissions on the sheet and self- assigning teams over there could work? We could have a small counter to the side for the number of submissions per team, and users would be encouraged to keep it balanced as they add to it. Of course, this is contingent on most participants actually adding to the sheet.

If the data we see is correct, I expect there to be a lot of topics if each of the dates listed are going to be given a memory or recollection. If that is indeed going to be the case, I suggest creating a drop-down with a bullet list for them, in this top wiki post.

I saw your suggestion in the main thread! I’ll work on restructuring the top post with that info in a sec!

I’m willing to try when I am off work, but I’m not the savviest fellow. Just point me towards a team and I’ll follow orders.

I still really like the idea of a copy-pasta about Porwiggles. If I came up with an Attenborough-esque narrative about the Porwiggle life-cycle, would it make sense to add a 4th team? I think I would suggest labeling it 1-star, as it would be fairly NMS related.

I volunteer for dragons den. It would be an honor

I think its worth a shot! I can add it to the list up top and people can discuss what to write down for their submissions. If you come up with the narrative bloc, ill add it to the top post as a guide for others to follow for their submissions!

This ought to make for some very interesting reading. I can’t wait. :joy:

Amidst all the Dragon talk, lets not forget the Birds

I wonder if they exist on a diet of Porwiggles?

I almost submitted a piece about riding hummingbirds during the last event.

All updates are go! The last entry in the tracking sheet has also been updated with a Team Tracker to allow people to keep them balanced when self-assigning, as well as a column to do so! It’ll be used as both a staging ground for the next submissions, as well a counter for what was submitted during the event and whether or not it was taken up by the system.

I had previous submitted a memory for this date - 65DOS album announced via mailing list. This was how I learned of No Man’s Sky. The two fit together so well.

I can’t recall exactly what I entered for the memory request. I used to love their gigs in my student days at sweaty mosh pits, or chilling and focusing with mathematical beats.

65propaganda / 080416 / Infinity Test

Greetings, Earthlings.

If somehow, between the glacial rush of yesterday’s news, the creeping decay of the built environment, the lone slog to work on crammed mass transit, the dilatory hit of tabloid filth that crept in past the defences you erected round your best self, the screen’s mad diet, cogent analysis of the crimes of the wealthy, the blood on the hands of the kings, the inhumanity of collective consciousness, the brinkmanship of capitalism and the brink of survival versus funny animal .gifs, you wondered where 65dos had got to, then wonder no more!

If, above the white noise rainfall of the weeping of our souls, you had time to feel the bittersweet ache of that little 65daysofstatic shaped hole in your life, then trouble not, for here we are to solve none of that, but nevertheless here with you in this, the shortest and newest of epochs, these low, dishonest few decades between peak everything and the new nothing.

Brothers and sisters, let’s hold hands.

Here’s what we’ve been up to:

A couple of years ago we were approached by video-game makers Hello Games to provide some original music for a new game they were developing, then known as ‘project skyscraper’, now known as ‘No Man’s Sky’, a sort of hyper-real, solitary waltz through a parallel universe in search of oblivion or whatever else feels appropriate in the face of the indifference of eternity.

The game, close to completion and due for release this summer, is also procedural, meaning, for those of you who don’t ‘do’ games, that it generates itself algorithmically rather than manually and therefore is, to all intents and purposes, evil. In other words, it means that the parts of the game one journeys through are theoretically unique, built by the game itself, and you are experiencing them for the first time. And the idea was to create an audio engine that also generated unique instances of music, albeit from a central library of sounds. 65daysofstatic sounds.

Our sort of gig, right?

Plus we got to go to Las Vegas and stay in a hotel room with a massive bath. But that’s another story.

65daysofstatic had been angling for a soundtrack project of some description for a while, but this seemed a little too perfect: classic sci-fi aesthetics married with a scope both cinematic and simultaneously HD but lo-fi, with a nice loose analogy for human loneliness or human agency or human desire in whichever unevenly distributed version of the future you happen to live in.

Right now, two years later, 65daysofstatic are working really hard with Hello Games’ best scientists and magicians to finish feeding enough raw music into the gaping mouth of the insane A.I. composer-in-the-machine to satisfy the tabula rasa that will conduct this vast symphony of noise, in time for the game’s release in June of this year.

And the fruits of this labour, we’ve made into an album.

And so:

‘No Man’s Sky: Music for an Infinite Universe’
The next 65daysofstatic record, and the official soundtrack to the game. Just short of two hours of new music. Delineated as such:

I like how we are fragmented just like in The Swarm… I should’ve gone Dragon’s Den just to stick with being Team Weaver.

We got four teams, that’s one better than what Hello Games did. Nyeh nyeh
