Getting a laugh out of life

When I was first married, My wife and I had an apartment we lived in for 5 years. We were young, we had few responsibilities, we were exploring the world together. It was a happy time.

A few years back, the whole area was redeveloped to make way for a football stadium. Not only was the apartment demolished - so were the surrounding streets, the shops, and the houses.

I found it an extremely weird feeling to know that the place holding so many of my early experiences no longer existed. It felt like my past had been erased - like my memories had been deleted. I hadn’t appreciated until then, just how much of my identity was tied to specific places.

As Joni Mitchell put it, “You don’t know what you’ve got ‘till it’s gone”.

The theatrical take ins for the new toxic avenger movie we’re used to eliminate 15 million dollars of medical debt <3

@Polyphemus are they even a good football team? Not that it would make it any better but I feel a bad team would just make it feel worse.

It was Liverpool FC. For the last 30 years, they’ve been quietly buying up residential and commercial property in the Anfield area. Then, about 10 years ago, they announced plans for a major stadium expansion, Not only did they expand the stadium itself, they also expanded adjacent exterior infrastructure such as car parks, access routes, community areas, and shops. To achieve this, they demolished a large part of the surrounding residential area. The final phases of the work were completed last year - but my old flat was demolished some years previously.

Do they at least have some sort of museum or plaques commemorating and archiving what was once there in the bits that are plopped down on top of it?

I’m delighted you didn’t say Everton. I’d have to give out to my dad that demolishing history isn’t going to make your team play any better

Ah, well Everton didn’t expand. Instead, they moved to a whole new stadium built on derelict dockland at Bramley-Moore Dock. Their original stadium, Goodison Park, was retained, and is now home to Everton women’s team, and to community activities.

Most of these are incredible and not at all misleading. This would sprinkle joy throughout peoples day in my opinion.

The ones that are, like the woolworths one, almost feel like they were done by a copycat who completely missed the point.

At least some things do survive. This coaster was originally built in 1923, perhaps 1912 and renamed in ‘23.

It was my first coaster. I rode it in the 80’s when it stood in Memphis, Tennessee.

This current version is all new construction from the original blueprints and now sits in Wisconsin.

Old rides shouldn’t be judged by modern standards though.

Why does a real bear look like a man in a bear suit?

It’s the eyes. See he is saying I love you but all he really wants is a free meal and a place to sleep for the night

That sounds like the jaded voice of someone who has experience of men in bear suits.

I categorically deny ever having been in a bear suit.

As to the rest…

It’s hardly surprising Lay’s are in trouble if 42% of their consumers are made of potatoes.

Are these consumers from Idaho?

But they didn’t know it.

I suppose I’ve never ment a sentient potato so can’t really comment.

Never been to Idaho, then.
