Bah. The real kicker were the bloody Pianos! (I am very grateful that I can just plonk a 22-inch screen on my small rollable desk and have at it. I remember a time where I needed to reinforce my desk to accommodate one, and needed about 30cm wall clearance because that’s how long the bloody tube was…)

Towards the end of CRT TVs, just when the first flat screens were becoming available, there was an attempt to introduce HD wide screen CRT televisions. They were so heavy they had to be delivered by specialist companies, and the house they were to be installed in had to have the loading capacity of their floors checked. Some wooden floors had to be reinforced to take the weight.

They struggled to catch on for a couple of years, then big LCD flat screens took over.

I had a CRT one that would simulate widescreen and leave a black bar at top and bottom. It adjusted stretching toward the edges. Not too horrible, but still pretty darned heavy!

Huh, that sounds almost exactly like a Piano…

When I was a kid, lots of families had a piano. For some reason they fell from favour in the 1960s, nobody wanted them, and it wasn’t worth the expense to repair or tune them - to the extent that for a while, piano smashing contests became popular - along with “How many students can you get into a telephone kiosk?” (or a Mini, or a Volkswagen Beetle).

The sixties weren’t all peace, love, and LSD. Some musical instruments suffered a violent death.

My mother still has a piano. She still plays it too.

Now I’m missing smelly old Coprite! That was a clever naming. And crystalline feces was a cool “weird SciFi” version. Feacium now seems like a cop[rite]-out.
