If we were to attend a special occasion (weddings, christenings, birthdays etc), and it was a few days ‘till bath night, my mother would strip us kids off, stand us in the kitchen sink, and sluice us off that way.
LOL…in southern California, suburbs have suburbs. There’s no ‘rural’ to speak of, and darn little ‘urb.’ A “rural” area generally consists of a first handful of houses that were built individually before the first subdivision, and people continue to call it rural until significant numbers of them are going a week without driving “into town.” That happens when at least one suburban strip mall gets built, at which point they have most everything that the nearby “town” has. Then they grow towards each other and when they meet they argue over which one is “the suburb” while anyone looking from the outside would say “both.”
I don’t have an exact number because I was off sailing the seas when it happened, but this valley had two ‘cities’ and I’m guessing well over a hundred thousand people before it had a three story building. Other than aircraft manufacturing hangers, which don’t really count because no matter how tall they are they are mostly just big shells. There’s 600,000 now and I could still count three story plus buildings on my fingers.
Oooh. Let’s go with Bampfylde. I love the old English spelling.
My last name had an old English spelling but the family changed it about 100 years ago. Bummer. Or maybe the census man just didn’t like it and Americanized it…who knows
I assume you’ve all seen the new generative ai enhancements that are coming with DLSS 5? A lot of memes doing the rounds as a result of their recent tech demo. We even got a NMS flavoured take on the situation
On the road again. Having to drive 500 miles to pick up my mom. Long story. Rather humorous but also fairly unnerving. Thinking of writing a story about it.
Anyone here live in Mississippi? Your roads are junk.
I had an Army staff sergeant who once said, “I drive straight through Alabama and Mississippi without stopping.” (Due to his fear of a racially-inspired police stop.)
There are a dang lot of police once you cross into Louisiana. Haven’t seen as many in Mississippi. Louisiana still has chain gang style prisons. Police in every little town waiting in speed traps. It’s awful. Bernice is the worst and has been for as long as I can remember. We came this way every summer when I was a kid because we have lots of family in Georgia. That is where I am headed.
I remember one time as a kid, we spent the night in Selma, Alabama. We never did that again. My dad avoided it altogether from then on.
But that was many years ago.
Edit: the pecan and peach orchards never looked so good. About 13 hours to get here. We were so tired, about 30 minutes before we arrived, we started laughing so hard over stupid stuff, we almost had to pull over and stop. My car kept flashing a warning at me to stop and take a rest.
Day 3 on the road
Mom retrieved
Headed home
Edit Holy hell. Been stuck in a backup from a wreck for 2 hours…
Edit. I am finally home and I am never leaving again
