There’s MUCH more to come.
My assumptions:
In 1.3, we got exotic planets. This caused a universal reset for the better. In 1.5, we’ll get ringed planets. I assume they won’t slap rings on current planets; that feels lazy. So I’m betting we will see an additional universal reset.
Sam Swain, Procedural Generation tech wizard, has been employed by HG for the better part of NEXTs development. You can not tell me, given this reset, that time was not taken to improve the procedural algorithm to planetary generation.
I dont know if this will be just new terrain, but flora and fauna as well, not to mention constructs.
I also don’t believe we can get added player models, as well as apparent PvP and PvE combat without overhauling how ground combat feels, similar to the treatment flight combat recieved in Atlas Rises.
God I could keep going. Theres going to be so much. Atlas Rises was half the development time of NEXT. With Xbox, it also serves as a relaunch for the game.
This will be the big one.
This will be revolutionary.
My hype is set to 11.
Bring on NEXT!
Agreed! There’s much, MUCH MORE TO COME!
So much, not even waking titan will be able to tease it all. Just some.
Except that at the GDC conference earlier this year, Hello Games lead programmer Innes McKendrick gave a whole presentation on how they’ve changed the structure of No Man’s Sky, so it’s easier to implement changes without re-booting the universe.
In light of that, I think a re-set is unlikely.
Very fair point, I recall this, I had forgotten all about it.
Either way, I feel we’ll see some great changes. It makes sense they’d figure out a way to change stuff without the reset everytime. Eventually there’d be no point to settling down anywhere in fear of the next reset.
I hope the ring is not just flat 2d model or whatever…
Same. I want to be able to crash into it LOL
Ok, but realistically, when you’re “in the ring” particles are actually really far away from each other…
To tamper expectations and ensure mindblown, I keep telling myself the actual port took half that time, adding multiplayer another… So they only had a couple of days for adding new features.
A new set of base decals incoming! Hype!
They can use a polygon for the when its at a distance, then spawn an asteroid field when you get close.
Is that talk available somewhere? Because I still haven’t seen it, but I’d be very interested to.
I’ve only seen the summary by Liz England - and I can’t even find that now.
This was my thinking of how it would be tackled too, with the games LOD shifting it to a type of asteroid field as you got closer. Seems the most practicle approach for the games engine.
Notice that video shows stars and nebula (or star dust) behind the ringed planet, those things are moving around planet. I had sensation to be orbitating planet, while looking at it.
I don’t see anything behind the planet. In fact, the one thing that jumped out at me first thing was that the planet isn’t rotating.
The 2017 talk is here, as well as all gdc conf videos.
The gdc vault has the 2018 Beyond Procedural Horizons: Exploring Different Uses of Procedural Content Generation as well, but you have to wait till august for it to be open to nonmembers.
I’m more interested if the flashes on each ringed planet means some more active weather.
Does anyone have a video of this using the hologram glass thing that came with the intercepted dev kits?
The only one that I know of was posted on Twitter:
I didn’t have a ruler or a good blade and most of the segments snapped but I kinda made a haphazard attempt at my own one
