I assume we have all done the same thing; stood proudly on our skiff, gone into photo mode, panned away for the hero shot and immediately knocking the skiff over because the camera interacts with it physically <3
Not yetâŠthanks for the warning
I wanted to see how fishing looked from both players perspectives before the expedition started so I flew both my cahracters to same spot.
The first char there I deployed the skiff and as I flew my second character down their Skiff was invisible, they were walking on the ocean.
So I placed my seocnd characters skiff down what I thought was next to the other characters skiff but was actually slightly on top of it, even though their skiff was invisible to my second player the skiff still reacted as if it was there and it went flying up into the air and then spiraling across the surface of the sea.
Try it next time you see someone fishing on their skiff Give yourselves both a fright
I may have to go for some dramamine
and it finally threw me overboard
i gotta leave this planet. Catching irradiated fish has made me crazy
But Phase 2 complete!
I would say No, Donât do it, but the gun is well and truly IN your head, I feel we got here too late.
Stopped to film peaceful fisherman on the shore but the storm scared everyone off. Timelapsed for convenience to demonstrate ships bobbing on surface
(iâm dancing on the skiff on the far right next to hauler, it doesnât end well)
đ«š:nauseated_face: just watching that makes me ill. VR anyone?
I would have never guessed fishing. It must be a mandatory dlc for every game.
VR⊠gotta find a YTuber to watch
You can release fish if you are in an underwater base as it counts as being in the water.
Sadly you cannot fish outside of an airtight door or a moon pool
I did get knocked off a skiff while fishing and was able to fish and successfully catch while underwater. I had to swim back up to fish again upon reeling.
Finally? Why do they say finally? More like âcompletely out of left fieldâ!
Time to see what I can drag up today.
I donât like how people keep getting this story mixed up. People seem to think they completley 180âd and made all of this in 4-6 weeks because of that fanart '^ _ ^
Saw a lot of people commenting the same thing. This just isnât true and shows a worrying gap between what gamers understand about game design etc.
Itâs the same problem that gave us such a headache on launch day, guess some things donât change. I would say it most certainly inspired them to maybe get it out the door quicker and to steer the course of the finishing touches. but this is clearly something thatâs been worked on for a good while now.
I wouldnt say its out of left feild either. Iâve seen fishing as a request since before the game launched and I donât think you can officially be an MMO or RPG without one. Technically to some, NMS is now officially content complete XD
I will say, Iâve played all the fishing mechanics in all the games and I never enjoy them, theyâre usually just barriers to items I need to get.
Something about stopping on a planet youâre exploring and setting up a line to fish just hits different. I think itâs because Iâm aware that I could be fishing anywhere on this planet, but I chose this place and Iâm really taking in the surroundings.
I feel its opened up away to interact with these worlds like never before, it gave me a similar feeling in third person that I only got from the game when playing it in VR.
Anyone else get this from fishing? I was shocked to be honest, to find myself enjoying this Expedition this much.
I was on a frozen world fishing and listening to other travellers have conversations with proximity mics and typing. Iâve never seen that before, everyone is usually too busy running around to finish the damn thing.
edit:
Okay even more annoying, IGN have directly changed what Sean wrote to better fit this spin on what actually happened â ^ _ ^ Seriously lads? Was this even necessary?!
IGN
One piece of fan art in particular stopped us in our tracks, of a player lazily fishing from their wing of their boat. That inspired our next update Aquarius - where we finally add fishing to No Manâs Sky!â
Aquarius Update Post
One piece of fan art in particular stopped us in our tracks, of a player lazily fishing from their wing of their starship. This art, and others like it, was right at the heart of the inspiration behind the Aquarius update.
edit:
And if we get our Waifuâs in another 4-5 weeks then I take everything back, I was wrong, they really can just course correct and make stuff in no time.

Catador_De_Potos shared their new dream XD
Oh cool, so far Iâve just fished out some tech that claims to have been much better in its heyday.
A 5% speed boost to my starship and a 200% boost to my scanningâŠ
Iâm assuming they cant be all duds, and there must be ones that outdo X modules or come close to them?
Yes. I was initially dreading it as I usually avoid fishing in games. But as you said⊠Its actually kinda chill. Drop a base 'puter, set up a basic camp. Cook some fishies. Feels quite proper as âTravellerâ life.
Next update, Hello Games are going to convince me I actually love to Golf and itâs the best sport. Theyâre slowly nudging us into the retired Banker lifestyle, just you wait.
I caught a few Legendary with fishing traps, was quite surprised.
Looking in the Fishing Records, the fish type no longer shows as a shilouette but as a transparent desaturated image of the fish. It will also display the value of the fish as it does for those youâve caught, however it will not keep a record of size or count towards numbers caught in the fishing records.
Looks like traps are good for seeing whats in the waters/making quick money but youâll need to get your hands dirty if you want to impress the lads down the pub with your latest catch
Iâm not sure if it has that much to do with game design. I think itâs save to say that NMS at this point doesnât follow traditional game design procedures anymore. The whole âletâs just put in whatever feature we find interesting at the momentâ-attitude they have going is pretty much anathema to that.
Thereâs still the issue of effort, though. But⊠Looking at the LNF trailer, I could totally see that game having fishing mechanics planned right from the get-go. We also know that since worlds part I, the two share engines. Soooo⊠Assuming that fishing was already implemented in LNF, how hard would it have been to port? Itâs not really possible to answer without a deeper look into both, but it is possible that they could make it fit without too much hassle. Thereâs a lot of adjustments a couple of people can do around the edges in a month if thereâs a solid core.
That leaves the assets. The fish⊠can probably be bought in one giant package and maybe slightly modified. The skiff and the poles certainly can be made in the time available.
Iâm not saying this is what happened⊠but I donât consider it impossible that a couple people looked at that fan-art, looked at each other, and went âHow much effort do you think it would be to port those fishing mechanics over from LNF?â.
So, no bugs in LNF fishing, because it was all tested in NMS.
I tried storm fishing yesterday on my skiff. It did not go well. And the storm didnât last that long.
@Mad-Hatter @toddumptious I am just in my normal save, but I think I got the storm bait recipe when I got the fishing rod upgrade.
It most certainly got ported over from LNF but I do think it was always intended to be part of one of the new ways to interact with the game mentioned as part of the overall Worlds update. Fan art certainly played a part in spurring them on and maybe pushing part 2 further out to get this mechanic to us sooner (though the included expedition and themed items leads me to believe it was planned like this for a while).
Iâm just trying to steer course away from the myth thats popping up that this was done completely off the back of that fanart, which a lot of people seem to be coming away with from how itâs discussed in comment threads on x/reddit etc.
