Iām of a similar mindset, though usually wait for after significant updates (like Cosmos). Soon, I hope, Iāll be finishing all the myriad software installs, updates, etc. on my replacement PC and then copying over the old HDD steam files for NMS. Then it will be:
- Update my oldest save for new stuff.
- Start a new save and do the playthrough. Though a bit tedious, I donāt really mind completing the paths. I do lower need for resources to reduce the grind, though.
Which will happen first?
- George R R Martin finishes GOT
- Light No Fire gets a new trailer
- Clemm finally gets their replacement PC running NMS
Trying to work out if I was being optimistic, or pessimistic. ![]()
Wow, waay too hard to choose one ![]()
Good one. My caregiver status is consuming a lot of time lately and likely will continue.
Stay tuned for PC developments as they happen. ![]()
Is anyone else running AMD and having issues with the game being very dark and everything looks like oily plastic?
I have been able to run all settings on ultra until Cosmos. I am hoping it is just an update that needs to happen.
My specs in case it helps

I use Mesa drivers
A common occurence in No Mans Sky when youve been playing it this long. You get so used to seeing the same details that you stop noticing them, so when an update lands, you start to look at things and wonder, has this always been this way and if so, for how long?
Today for whatever reason, my brain got hyper focused on the steam/smoke/gas coming out of every small vent in the Space Stations.
Is it gek scent air freshener? Or perhaps a calming mind control vapour that makes everyone passive and keeps the place free of argument and conflict?
I use AMD and donāt see that. I do get crashes.
On phone but Iāll check my drivers, but theyāre pretty ones from Arch.
EDIT - Iāve not gone into the packages in detail, but it looks like i use Mesa and Vulkan drivers.
Radeon RX 6700/6700
AMD Ryzen 5 5600X
And Iāve just realised I forgot to put the graphics drivers in my zendesk crash report. ![]()
EDIT 2 - looking for a solution to my mouse capture problem (I thought Iād found a workaround, but itās not consistent), I remembered that I had had some issues with GTAO. Thereās some posts on the Proton DB page about it. I donāt think itās the problem youāre describing, but it might be worth turning off?
GTAO is definitely an issue as well so I have turned it off and reported it. But the overall look of the gane now for me is quite dismal. The last maybe dozen QS plants that we have gotten all looked this way too. Now the whole game looks this way. I will have to post some pics
Thatās a shame. Itās odd that we have the same card, but not the same problem.
Iāve just rolled back Proton to 11, from experimental (canāt remember where I saw that recommended), as someone on the Proton Db seems to have the same crash problem as me, and they said that worked for them. So Iāll see how it goes.
I have to leave so I donāt have time to test this theory. But you might check HDR settings in NMS, the desktop, and monitor setup. And maybe the monitorās profiles. I know that if I set my monitors to HDR but send non-HDR data my displays gets brighter and become very low contrast (dull). Maybe yours is converting the other way which (Iām imagining but didnāt yet test) which could darken the image and increase the contrast. Or the LUT in the profile is bad which could do about anything.
Here is an image of what I am dealing with. I have never had issues like this before.
In space, the new POI and lightning look amazing. But everywhere else, yuk.
Itās like the lights are off everywhere.
At night on the planets, I canāt see at all. And all glowing grass is messed up too.
On planets, everything looks oily. Even the animals.
A night scene
While visually the new planetary clouds view from space is a lot better, in practice I find it still needs some of the kinks ironed out.
It can really obscure a planets topography and make it tricky to figure out whats land and water.
It can also fade in too early on some planets.
I like to fly above the clouds occasionally and skim along the tops of them. I find on some planets now if I go even an inch above the cloud tops they fade out and it begins to transition to the new cloud layer as viewed from space, before Ive even remotely left atmosphere.
Other times it can take too long to fade and transition on planetary entry, to the point you are already past the cloud barrier before it renders in and switches to planet side cloud rendering. Sometimes it even gets stuck and leads to strange incidents where its lower than the highest geography.
Anyone else struggling with them?
I had to find a nocturnal swimmer last night and normally I would fly to the dark side from space, use photo mode to light it up and then see where water is through the cloud cover, and head there. (Assuming the planet isnt currently experiencing a storm).
With the new cloud cover, its almost as hard to make out the planets continents and oceans as it is during a storm in the old style.
Below I thought the darker parts must be water since it was a snow covered planet. Nope. Not water ![]()
Yes. I am having issues with this as well. I also look for water from space and now find, you really canāt. Add in the lighting issue I am having and sometimes I canāt even tell what is water and what is land at night.
Definitely seems like something funky is happening with the shaders. They did rework their lighting etc this update so might have done something weird.
Might need to wipe and reinstall drivers and clear games cache and reinstall it too, but maybe wait for someone who knows what theyāre talking about first before trying that.
I can only imagine my above problem with the new cloud coverage is even worse for you with this issue ![]()
I also believe it may be a shaders issue. There have been other updates where my graphics were just really bad for quite some time. One time, it lasted almost a whole year before another update set everything right again.
But this is the first time I have had it render the game difficult to play. Difficult to look at is one thing, but not being able to see is another.
Donāt make me show you what GTAO looks like. It is flipped backwards. What should be shadow is light and vise versa. I zendesked that one with pics.
I have tried several proton versions with no affect.
Here. I want you to suffer with me.
GTAO makes the shadows look like they are dark, ghostly fingers of the animals soul, streaking away into the night sky.
You can see the streaks being pulled up and away from the backs of the animals. It also does it on the grasses that are supposed to be glowing.
Topic - AI Upscaling for base PS5
Iāve seen videos on YouTube for DLSS upscaling for No Manās Sky on PC, and I am absolutely blown away with what Iāve seen. If you like PC gaming thatās fine, stick with what you like. But I donāt enjoy PC gaming, I donāt like being hunched over a mouse and keyboard. I like couch gaming. But I do love what Iāve seen with AI upscaling. Currently XBox doesnāt have AI upscaling, but Sony has released āQSSRā. QSSR is AI upscaling for the base PS5, not the PS5 Pro. And what Iāve observed is that Hello Games always utilizes available technology for whatever platform they develop on. I predict that with the next update, No Manās Sky for base PS5 will implement QSSR AI upscaling. And I canāt wait. I know it wonāt be as good as PC upscaling, but I know Iāll still like it.
I felt the same when I heard the announcement, could already envision the Martin Griffiths tweet about getting it up and running ![]()
I had just completed and uninstalled Wolverine when they announced it, so did not get to check it out for myself on one of the first games to get it.
Not that wolverine is as bad as theyre saying, the story was worth it for me though I may have held off for a sale in hindsight. I just cant be bothered reinstalling it to go pixel watching ![]()
I play on PC but am by no means hunched over a keyboard. I prefer the X box controller. I can lay back in my desk chair or even turn my recliner and lay in it.
I salute anyone who can play NMS with a keyboard. ![]()
