A couple of months ago I broke my right wrist in a fall. Since then, the arm has been in a cast, and I’ve been unable to do many things that required the use of my right hand -including playing games.

Yesterday I went back to the fracture clinic to have the cast removed. I also had an x-ray, saw an orthopaedic specialist, and was assessed by the physiotherapy team.

To cut a long story short, at the moment I am left with only very limited use of the hand. I can expect some improvement with time and exercise, but it may never recover completely.

I am somewhat disappointed.

Therapy should help. But we get so stiff as we age… Things tend to lock in place. Can your fingers type?
Hopefully you will improve enough to pay Cosmos… 💞

Yes, I can type - after a fashion. I can’t, however, grip anything, or pick up anything heavier than a matchbox. I can’t make any twisting motions - I can’t open screw top bottles, open a can, use a screwdriver, or brush my hair. My little finger is completely numb - no sensation at all.

Some of this is because the area around the fractures was quite badly smashed up - there’s tissue, tendon, joint and nerve damage - and some of that will eventually mend. I just have to wait and see.

I hope you’ll recover enough that you can keep doing what you like.

I don’t know what kind of advice you were already given, but here’s mine : go see a physiotherapist soon.
I had problems with my left hand on 2 occasions : severe tendinosis of every wrist and forearm tendons + those between palm bones, and the other was a deep cut to the thumb that had my nerve endings and flexor severed). Exercising, “ice sleeves” and massaging helped tremendously in both cases and today I can feel and move my thumb and play the drums like before. For the thumb nerves I was lucky to live near a hospital specialized in hand surgery.

Granted, my bones weren’t fractured but I think it’ll be part of how you recover 🙂

No broken bone is fun, and I’m sorry to hear it. After merely fracturing my left wrist 12 years ago (as part of a larger accident) I went through a lot of what you describe in terms of weakness and mobility (in my case also complicated by arthritis), and internal scar tissue issues persisted for a while. Sounds like your break is more complicated than mine was, so I don’t envy your road ahead, but persistence is key, ice gel packs are your friends, and I’ll certainly suggest investing in a lacrosse ball or two for your grip/squeeze home therapy.

Yes, the early results after a messy fracture repair can be a bit dissapointing. However it’s early days yet. Do the exercises & tollerate the pain, but don’t over do it. Give it six months of properly doing your physio & you’ll be surprised how much you gain back. It’s painful & it takes quite a bit of mental fortitude sometimes however the long term results are worth it. You may find some limitations & nasty pain & numbness, however over time it will become somewhat ‘normal’ & if you diligently exercise & do the physio at least you will be aiming for the best possible outcome.

My circumstances involved multiple shattered bones/joints & surgeries, a lot of titanium & initially I had no idea if I would ever be able to walk again & I was very disappointed for a while but slowly & painfully I got there. Not 100% but good enough to keep on living my life as I was before. Just a bit slower & a bit limpy. I take pain meds when the aches get really bad but try to avoid the really powerful stuff.

You’ll get there Poly 👍

Do you have enough range of motion and flexibility to use a keyboard and mouse? If so, you could lower difficulty settings to ease up on needed taps and clicks as you game in No Man’s Sky.

I actually met Douglas Bader at Wattisham RAF station some time in the late 1960s. He was an old man (to me), and I was a spotty teenager. He gave a speech - I thought he was incredibly arrogant and self-centred. Not a nice man.

Thank you to everyone who made encouraging comments. It’s much appreciated.

It’s not really like me to complain about my troubles - if I’m having difficulty, I’m more likely to just go quiet - but in this case, the combination of the heat and the injury seems to have got to me more than usual. So thank you for your support - I’m sure things will improve.

Oh, not quite the gentleman the film portrayed him to be. I had a read of his history on wikipedia after posting, seems like he was a bit of a rowdy rebel without a cause most of his early life.

I have a funny hospital story, I had my right hip replaced with a ceramic housing and steel ball joint about 9 years ago. Half way through the Op they must have been cautious with how much anaesthetic they gave because I woke up wondering what the vibration was. I raised my head and looked down to see a surgical circular saw buzzing its way through cutting off the top of my leg bone. I’m not squeemish so was more curious about watching the procedure. When the nurse and doctor saw me looking their eyes went wide and the nurse rushed to up the dose, and back to snooze land I went.

Still remembering their faces gives me a laugh. Anyway yeah the physio got me up and walking with the aid of a walker frame within 3 days. The other guys in the same ward who had the same Op were amazed to see me getting around while they were still in bed .. A few of them realised the Physio self help exercises I had been following to the letter every few hours must have helped get me ahead, they then started doing them.

I’m now looking forward to the left hip being done within the next year, no reservations at all.

Joking at work recently I’ll be like the Six Million Dollar Man, able to leap small buildings “We have the technology, we can rebuild him” 😃

@Javtron91

Sorry to hear that bud. I know that prognosis isn’t what you want to hear at all.

As for the gaming issue, there are companies that make a variety of controllers for people with various disabilities. Maybe for thr time being while you get your arm and hand in order, you can find something that switches some controls to your feet or has a more workable system for you.
I just did an online search and there are loads of variations.
Hope this helps a little bit. Hope you have a speedy recovery.
