Is this tales of earth sea? I’ve never actually seen it, I just know it made Goro never want to direct animation like this again 😅 went back to being an architect. Though i believe he did that 3d ghibli short a few years ago. Something about a witch and an earwig? Goro shows up a lot in the HNK doc series and he seems like a pretty sweet guy carrying a massive burden. Apparently , elements of The Boy and The Heron was also his fathers way of apologizing for the pressure he put on his son and the coldness he showed towards him during and after its production, which is all captured in HNK series and somewhat in Kingdom of Dreams and Madness. Reminds me of the Mishimas in Tekken a little 🤣 ---

2001 is on. Still the best sets ever made for a movie. But, the earth spinning around outside the window during the video phone call is too much. Some people would be hurling up their socks. 😅 ---

I saw 2001 on a wide screen cinema in 1968. I thought the special effects were astonishing, the plot was intriguing, and the ending was pretty, but completely incomprehensible. At the time, I was willing to accept that my lack of understanding was due to insufficient education and life experience. By the time I was in my thirties, I had rejected this idea, and concluded it seemed to be a bad ending because it really was a bad ending. Now, with access tto the internet, I can find the neither Stanley Kubrick nor Arthur C Clarke had any idea how to finish the thing, so they cobbled together some nonsense they hoped would be suitably mysterious. ---

That makes sense. I’ve always felt that cigarettes are the cornerstone of a civilised society. You can directly correlate our current decline in decent, co-operative behaviour with smoking reduction. Ever since Walter Raleigh came home with tobacco, people have recognised it as the supreme aid to wisdom and contemplation. ---

The problem is that it takes a series of actually pretty good novels and cramps them into one movie with all the issues that usually come with that. And then, for some reason, they also give it an ending that has absolutely nothing to do with any of the books and also makes no sense whatsoever in the context of the movie. It is _quite_ baffling… ---

Despite me obviously never smoking inside, and indeed always on the leeward side of the house, and always brushing my teeth afterwards. Her nose is just too good, I’m afraid. ---

The trick is to do it outside but also with no clothes, then nobody will smell the smoke on you but all your neighbours will think youre some sort of pervert. Its the sacrifice you must make to smoke incognito. ---
