The exploration of any party of D’ni or even any linked world would be the driving force.
This is what makes a Myst fan return for more.
They could make new games that explore new worlds or new parts of D’ni for decades and it would never get old.
I would have played it for sure.
And I am not sure on the returnability of a game being necessary. I have replayed many games from Skyrim to Red Dead Redemption even though I know exactly what is going to happen.
So still the question remains… Why did it not get released?
And maniacal people craving control is a central theme Myst. If linking books were real, it would be a real problem. The ability to control entire worlds would be too tempting.
Sad to see them abandon something that looked like it was coming together but it sounds like they have a few other Myst eggs in their basket theyve pivoted focus to. Hardest thing to do is to kill your darlings but its a necessary part of the creative process sometimes.
Various reasons I can think of, mostly speculative. Obduction did not nearly get as much traction as it was expected/hoped for. Remake of Riven did not get as many sales as expected/hoped for. In the end, it needs to make money when looking for funding to create a game. This 4 month work on a prototype did not make it, they could not find the funds.
I do wonder if that is fully the end of it, but I suspect not, as they do hint at more to come … still ‘fishy’ /// lol

I am still hopeful, and actually quite optimistic about the future, even though back to a small team, and apparently somewhat disappointing numbers with some of their last endeavours.
Various other articles on Project Anglerfish, mostly speculative.

As much as I love the Myst series, here in the US, some of the creators have been very politically vocal. That may have really hurt them in the long run. I stopped following them on social due to that reason. It’s really too bad because the story is so deep the series could go on for Ages.
It may be one of those situations where it would be better to hand the lore to a new guard and let them carry it from there.
Oh no, that doesn’t sound good. Another dev I wish would shut up or who I wish I didn’t know the politics of, is Johnathon Blow who made The Witness. Which is a game that felt like a spiritual throwback to those old pre-rendered FMV puzzle darlings of the 90s.
I liked that game. Have you tried ViewFinder? Very interesting and enjoyable. Not like Myst though.
Really fun. Picked it up soon as I saw it as that was the original concept for Portal 2 when they were workshopping ideas and thinking of going in a radically different direction from the Portal Gun. Some tech demos of it were later released online.
Not sure if ViewFinder was created by devs attached to those early designs or if the team were inspired by the idea and decided to take it since Valve tossed it aside.
Superliminal is another fun one that plays with perspective if you’ve not tried it yet but I think you have if memory is not tricking me, nice to have an excuse to bring it up again anyway ![]()
Comments section in videos for the Outer Wilds are always insanely wholesome and this one is no different.
So I was correct. Pre fall D’ni. That game really needs to happen
Carefully worded… This project is not releasing in it’s current form… It is not being released at this time …
Slapping your hand down on that linking book… ![]()
Definitely getting the hard bound books
I really hope something will eventually happen, for sure!
Great to get another opportunity at those books, although I gather they will be different, even better than before. I am sure I’d want those too, even though I already got the original first prints. (see: D'ni and Rivenese Prepping for Riven - #67 by DevilinPixy)
My biggest regret of never getting, was probably one of those linking books with the screen built-in.
This comes out tomorrow, or it might already be out for you digitally if you live in the future.
Been really looking forward to it but I think it will be a while before I have a decent group of folk to enjoy it with in my neck of the woods.
If anyone gets it hit me up, it’s cross play ![]()
I’ve been considering it, but I’ve got a lot on my “to be played” pile, so I might leave it a while before I get it. I might suggest it to m old student mates for our infrequent online get togethers though.
I noticed I couldnt pre purchase it yesterday which is unusual for a digital game.
Turns out its part of the ps plus free games today. That was very kind of them to not make people pay for it early only to find its “free” on release.
I think I will buy it anyway as I would like to support the developer and I dont usually pay for a full year of ps plus anyway. But will be nice to try it for free until some friends pick it up later in the year.
I’m away for a few days so will be interested to see reactions when I’m back. My son’s on PS+ though so may see if he’s happy to download it for a few days, when I’m back.
Finally got to play Big Walk tonight, tried it with a good buddy of mine that emigrated to Spain. Very fun game to just hang out in. Thought we were gonna be trapped in this room forever ![]()
OMG that is so funny!
Salt in the wound…I could really use a new MYST game…
